IMO it should be mandatory training to have a trailering course to even tow a travel trailer or Drive a RV for that matter.

In BC this is required depending on size I believe.

Many unskilled and low experience level in all industries I think. Personally witnessed it for years in the patch. However there is only one way to get experience.

True. But in lots of places there is too much fast tracking going on. It used to take several years even up to a decade to even make it into the derrick on a drilling rig. Nowadays I’ve met drillers that had only been in the game 3 years. Scary.

While I agree with you that many that fit this category are new Canadians, it brings a topic to the forefront that may or may not be related to this accident.

It seems to me more and more lately that there is a lack of training, and mentoring across the trucking industry that has resulted in a very high amount of unskilled and unprofessional drivers being found behind the wheel. I don’t believe it to be 100% an ethnicity issue either.

I see it every time I drive on any 4 lane highway the most. Truckers not paying attention to their surroundings, cutting off drivers in the fast lane so they can pass the truck in front of them that’s doing 2 km/hr slower than them instead of just slowing a bit or waiting for a break in traffic. Blowing by people broke down or stopped on the side of the road even when they have room to move over.

Many truckers like to blame 4 wheelers for doing dumb stuff in front of them but many times I’ve seen this happen out of anger and frustration due to something the truck did earlier.

No offence to any of the “professional” drivers on here. I have spent time behind the big wheel, I have family that trucks freight, logging and heavy haul. I know about the struggle for the independents to make a dollar and meet time restraints. These are just my thoughts based on my experience.

This accident was a tragedy and very saddening. It will be interesting to see the conclusion from the investigation as to the root cause(s) in hopes that recommendations result from it to keep it from happening again.

The problem is across the industry not just a certain demographic unless you consider that demographic new and unskilled drivers.

bang on Brandon. My uncle before retired was #3 in command for Arrow Transport which has over 800 trucks in the fleet. He keeps telling me its only going to get worse. A report last year said the trucking industry will be 5000 drivers short by 2020. Right now the industry hires anybody willing to get behind the wheel regardless of their qualifications (proper paper work???? yes but proper training no).

The trucking industry has been struggling for decades, I remember a old school driver saying if a company could get a monkey trained, they would stick it behind the wheel of a truck.
Lol that was over 20 years ago I was told that. So maybe he was right after all.

Back to the original subject of the thread.....I think the rest of the country has done a magnificent job of demonstrating our sadness and support for all involved in what happened, but maybe it’s time to step back, turn the cameras off and let the families grieve in peace....

I started drilling 2 weeks before my 20th birthday. By the time I was 24 I was drilling off shore and came home and started consulting at 25. I habe several awards from various companies in regards to safety and excellence as well as a shelf of plaques from caodc for awards of safety and excellence. 27 record runs, 4 fast holes and 5 pace setters that 3 of which I know still stand. Age is a number and not a standard. After all that my greatest accomplishment was know that I set my crew up for success and not failure.

Should also mention I never worked on a rig smaller the 3300m and if you know rigs that makes a difference

So rumor floating around is that the driver has fled the country.
Said on the news this morning he is still in Canada cooperating with RCMP.
Investigation ongoing yet.
