I would really like to take welding, (yes I know those guy get their tickets in cereal boxes) lol, but they don't offer much for spring courses. Just figured it would be handy to have. Also this spring I'm taking a sawer course on milling wood. Any opportunity for a couple extra bucks.

Here's all you need to know for your welding ticket, 2+2=weld :p

There’s stick sh!t together and hoping it holds, then there’s actual welding knowing it’s good. Come watch me tig a piece of stainless steel pressure piping together. Where you need to follow strict procedures to maintain the properties of the stainless. Then you will be singing a different tune.

There’s the gob and grind guys and then there’s the guys who are true artists with their craft. When you see a good welder, it’s impressive.

Never too late to do something different, lack of dedicated hard working people out there so if your not one of them you got it made. Find out what you like and get at it, don’t be afraid to try something to see if you like it, if not move on. There is a career out there for everyone.

I did my Millwright in my Teens and early Twenty's, then Mobile Crane in my late Twenty's. Went with people in into their later 40's. The younger people struggled as much as the older ones, and the older ones did just as good as the younger ones. It comes down to the person and being interested in the trade. They teach you the math, it's not like you will just get a test and have to do a long hand rim and face alignment calc or an electrical equation or figure out sling tension. If it interests you go for it.

Anyone here started a new career-trade after being out of school for over 20 years? Certainly not getting any younger but it's time for a change!
A little concerned about the lack of memory after killing too many brain cells over the years:( That and the thought of going to school with a bunch of young kids is certainly a turn off. Thoughts?

What trade were you thinking of getting in to?

I went back to University for a Master's degree when I was 40. I never gave a thought to age being a deterrent. A wife and 4 very active children gave me more second thoughts than anything else. It worked out just fine. Being older and having real life experience in the working world was a very positive asset; meeting dead lines, planning ahead, taking things in stride, and being able to prioritize allowed me to enjoy and thrive. Marks were high and personal growth was impressive.

Saying that, I had a good job to go back to and it was a good place in time with wages, continuity, and opportunity. Don't sell yourself short because of age. Look forward to the journey and the opportunity.

Some great advice guys. Appreciate all the input!
How come all my welder friends seem to be half or fully mental? They make a great living but I don't think all the fumes are great for you.
