Here's why you should buy from a local farmer vs the local colony......
The local farmer likely has a vested interest in his community and probably supports the local businesses....ie drug stores, hockey rinks, curling rinks, restaurants, car dealerships, equipment dealerships, seed and fertilizer stores. His kids are likely in local 4H, hockey, soccer, dancing, etc. He likely belongs to the local clubs, church's, community boards. Not saying that he doesn't shop in the city too but overall he likely supports his local community
Colony's hardly support the local community....they may buy from the local equipment dealer and maybe buy their seed & fert locally but that is about it. They buy their groceries and medical supplies in bulk from the large centers (sometimes from wholesale outlets). They have massive buying power and buy up land snuffing out the smaller operator and once it becomes hutterite land...it never comes back on the market.
While they may be at the farmers markets selling their product, they don't spend much of their money locally. Keep that in mind the next time you but a chicken from your local colony.
Try and support those that support you (or your community) back......

I agree but saying that, if there were a local supplier that supplied range fed chickens as good as the Huts, we would probably buy from them. I realize the hostility and have been living in and around it since the sixties. The only thing that changes is that they are getting bigger and the marginal farmers are getting fewer and further between. It has been going on for a long time. I guess it is kind of like shopping at the big box stores compared to the local corner store. I one of those also.

I like the Hutterites, they give us lots of business.
easy to deal with and pay on time.
They work together and live a life style I respect but wouldnt
want for my self.

They are pretty good at milking the system to their benefit using yours and mine tax dollars to look after their own. Dental medical chiropaid for as Low income families but yet the colony is a multi million dollar operation
If I could just provide food lodging for a worker I'd be a lot bigger operation but govt won't let me do that....
if you could do that with your business think of the $$$ you'd have

Some areas they are much better than others just like the rest of society
I think they are finding it harder to keep younger generations around with the lure of flashy stuff. Expected to work hard and responsible for big operation- can go work hard in the patch or for someone and make $ 20-30+ hr and have flashy stuff too
