Father in law wants to delete his AFM on his 5.3L in a 2016 Silverado.

Has anyone used Range Technologies AFM disable device? or any other method to disable...

I would assume a mod like this would void warranty?

v8 – Range Technology | AFM Solutions for GM Cars, Trucks & SUVs

PS....looking for information, post your brand bashing in the appropriate post....
Hypertech programmer you can turn it off. I got mine turned off. I would recommend it. You exhsust has this spring flapper to create back pressure when in 4cylinder mode. It was causing my truck to shut down and blow seals when it was in 8cylinder mode when the flapper got stuck shut. It's a stupid idea for environmental purposes they say. I took the flapper out and turned off afm with my programmer and it's twice the truck with better fuel economy. Resized_Screenshot_20170110-075446.jpeg

U can bolt and nut the flipper open, and it's for the tone noise made from v8 mode to v4 mode

I am to old school to do that lol. My dad drills it in my head to oil is changed at 5000km. When you say you pull oil samples what you do you do? Just pull it out and look or you get it tested?

Haha yeah so is my father, nothing really wrong with it if it helps Ya sleep at night. With this truck the oil capacity is 8 litres so I would have had to change the oil 12 times in one year at $100 a change if going 5000 km. Instead I've changed it 4.

I pull a 4 oz sample and it gets sent to Metro Tech systems in Calgary where they break it down and analyze it to see what all is in the oil and viscosity levels at certain temps. They also look for fuel and glycol in the oil.

I have a 14 Sierra with 5.3. I tried putting tow haul mode on and it still switched to 4 cylinders. I change my oil every 10,000 km and oil life monitor still says 30% or more left, that is about every 4 months. I have never had to add oil in between changes.

Try running your truck in M5 next time. The AFM shouldn't cut in until you switch to 6th gear.

A little off topic but interesting none the less about ford rejecting the new specs for diesel oil for the 6.7. Some very good points at the beginning about almost all changes in formulations are due to emissions requirements.

Not so sure I'd trust a "certified oil specialist" wearing an amsoil shirt. Plus I've never seen a spiderweb graph before. All the info on oil specs is on the API website, and they don't hide the reasons for the changing formulations. As engines, emissions and other technologies change the lubricants have to change as well. The auto manufacturers are forced to come up with things to meet the mandated CAFE standards set by the EPA, things like energy conserving lighter weight oils and the AFM crap that GM puts into their engines. It sucks but not much we can do but buy the vehicles and then modify them to work properly.

How much does it cost to get it analyzed?

Naaaw...its a 2010 bought in late 2010. On the plus side, I dug my old 02 Ranger out of the snowbank and it fired right up...hasn't ran since September. Good ol Mazda engineering.

If he is already running an aftermarket full synthetic, 15,000 is fine....
You don't need full synthetic to run higher km's.

The average hours on a vehicle at 10,000km is only 200 hours. Any major construction equipment runs 500hrs between changes with dino oil. Plus, our equipment runs min 15,000hrs - 20,000hrs before we start thinking of trading them off. 5000km oil changes is old thinking and a waste of $$ and resources.

I think the other way, use synthetic and change every 5000 ish km, gas or diesel

Got a 09 Jeep unlimited with 330000 km, never been opened up and don't burn a drop in 5000 km
