Why so many riders without helmets still?

The way I see it, it is all based on risk management. That involves assessing the likelihood or probability of having an accident, measured against the consequences or impact that accident would have. For quading, based on my riding style, I assess the probability of having an accident as low. I don't do jumps, catwalks, or drive very fast. In fact the last rally I went to in Sundre (where I wore a helmet) I actually got lapped by several riders, including one shirtless and helmetless guy driving a Yamaha Bruin of all things. I have been riding ATVs since the late 70s when they had three wheels, shifting up was down, and Hondas were green.

The point I am trying to make is helmets are not the end-all be-all in ATV safety. There are lot of other things overlooked in an ATV accident like speed, alcohol, poor judgement, bad decisions, or lack of training and experience. Wearing a helmet is your last defence. If you ignore all the other aspects a helmet is probably pointless. Its kind of like an avy beacon. Sure you can wear one, but does that mean you can ignore all the other factors that may cause an avalanche?

Sorry to say this, but if you have been in multiple ATV accidents at less than 5 mph, including one with multiple rollevers, I can only conclude that you are either a bad or inexperienced rider, or that you have no ability to understand or measure the impact of your riding decisions.

I have been on motorized toys before i could ride a bicycle so i don't think inexperience is the issue! lol

Like i said you guys must ride pasture if you dont see the under side of one machine every ride. I like to go everywhere, the hole no one else has the balls to try or the hill climb that is right on the edge of way too steep. I am the first into the river or creek to find a way accrossand i do not give up easily either, i will try an obstacle multiple time trying different lines or angles until i suceed. To me that is the fun, if you are not pushing yourself to your limits and beyond you are not getting any better you are just taking up space!

My quad has been upside down no less than three times so far this summer and only one of those times was i going faster than 5mph, i even had to swim for it once! lol

Don't get me wrong i am not saying it will save you everytime but it is part of the protection i wear and i expect my riding partners to at least have one also, the rest of the gear i wear is up to them.

Have you seen what 66 stitches across the face looks like before the hospital? Have you ever tried to get an injured person out of the bush and to the hospital that is two hours away from camp while their face is leaking like a smashed ketchup bottle? I have, and I almost wish i would have taken a picture because that is all the convincing anyone needs right there.

Sounds like that is more dangerous than quading without a helmet..... walking out onto a road when someone is riding their quad down it, to stop them.......hmmmmmmm maybe the guy doesn't see your boy one day and bam ran over just like that......... and you'll probably blame the guy on the quad cause he wasn't wearing a hemet........ mother of the year!!!!!!

Wow! Ur real special! It's a 30km/hr rd, 15 for quads. We live in the country, u can hear a quad or vehicle coming a mile away. My kids aren't stupid, apparently smarter than you! And I get a mother of the year award every day of my life!

I would suspect that people don't wear helmets because there is no law that requires a helmet to be worn (in Alberta at least). Until the government makes it a law I don't see what the problem is not wearing one, its a personal choice. I think that riding safely and slowly without a helmet is much safer than riding dangerously and fast with one. It boggles my mind that guys on here complain that their ATV can only get up to 80 km/h on the trail, or it only has X hp. Seriously, who needs to go that fast or needs all that power? Slow down and enjoy the scenery for once. When I go top speed is maybe 25 km/h on a good trail and if it looks unsafe I don't do it, it's that simple.

If you should wear a helmet on an ATV just because it is safer, then you should wear one when your driving your car too using that same logic. Heck, grocery shopping would probably be safer too if you had a helmet.

If helmets become manditory, so too should speed limits, hp restrictions, and manditory training.

Be careful what you wish for, all these things are included in BC's proposed new ORV regulations. So beware if you want to play in BC in the future.

I never said that I was necessarily wishing for any of these things. I have no problem following the laws of whatever province I ride in, whatever they may be. This includes registration, insurance, and helmet laws if required. There are some rules changes that I would definitely support, some not so much. If they changed the laws in Alberta to make helmets manditory I won't b!tch and wine, I'll just follow the law. But until that time comes, don't preach to everyone that they should it because you do. Remember when you point your finger at someone there are 3 fingers pointing back at you.

See following attachment for provincial laws for ATVs. Saskatchewan has done some good things when it comes to ATV and sled safety. Included in this age restrictions, supervision of kids requirements, and manditory training for young drivers. No province has yet to require manditory training for adults though as far as I am aware. If it was manditory in Alberta I would gladly take the training if it meant I could still enjoy the activity. The same argument could be made for manditory avy training for sledding in the mountains....and that probably wouldn't be a bad idea either.

U think u've upset us? Ha! I doubt any of us are upset by you. It's one thing for you to say you don't wear a helmet, to which we've all basically said that's your perogitive but to almost try and ridicule us for wearing ours?? That's real mature! And then to be happy that you think you've upset us, wow that's great character!!

Who is riding daddies toys? lol You are giving yourself too much credit if you think my user name has anything to do with my age!!!

Haven't ridden any of his toys for twenty years.lol they were too underpowered for me anyways.

I am 34 and have been on motorcycles quads and sleds since i was four. Nice try

Now go ride in your flat pasture your shoe size has exceeded your IQ.

The less interference from government regulations I have in my life the better. I don't need the government to tell me what safe or unsafe when riding an ATV. I am a responsible and safe driver who respects the area I ride in. I routinely go around things instead of through them (been there done that). I always pick up discarded beer and pop cans or other garbage on the trail of other helmet and non-helmet wearing riders. I have valid registration and insurance. I don't ride in closed areas or during closed times. If there are designated trails I stick to them. But I guess I set a bad example for others because I sometimes don't wear a helmet.

Trust me, it will start with manditory helmet laws. Next thing you know it will be hp, speed, and tire restrictions. Then closed areas and designated areas only. Then designated trails in designated areas. Before you know it we'll all be riding on private land only.

Trust me i do not need or want any more regulation, but everytime some tard makes the front page of the paper for crashing his quad with out a helmut the closer we are to having it law. I simply do like to perform first aid on friends or expect to ruin their weekend by having them perfrom first aid on me. It is about RESPECT for each other. I have a limited amount of free time why waste it in the ER if you can avoid it.

If we could all be smart enough to wear one before the gov makes it a law maybe it wont??? Maybe we should start a petition to get TMO to sell his quad and take up sky diving with out a chute then we could stop the bad press that will surely be the demise of our sport.

TB....this just made too much sense! stop with your posts making sense!!

lol.

i have a couple buddy cops. interesting fact they told me a couple years ago while i was loading my quad on my sled deck with no helmet in my drive way. 50% of atv related injuries were loading/unloading of quads and at slow rate of speeds. i now even wear my lid loading...well unless i forget.

it CAN happen. one human error...one ramp slides out, you forget to secure the trifold ramp, load on a sled deck, throttle sticks...you name it. you CAN end up under a quad...no matter how much experience or how slow you go. there is always a chance. your arguments about riding slow etc...are moot. and everybody knows...NO ONE is perfect. unless of course the guys without helmets are perfect? pretty much what they are saying....or they are saying they never have to load the quad up anywhere and they have a magic wand it it appears at their destination..lol

btw...i dont think anyone on here is upset..LMAO. i think everyone on here cares about this recreation and cares about fellow riders. i personally dont want to see anyone get hurt.

but thats just me....cheers

Holy chit, sounds like you need a riding lesson or a atv course lol

Nahh i just crash better than anyone i know so i always seem to be the test pilot. lol What's that drag racing commercial..."I have been upside down backwards and sideways faster than most people will ever go" lol

That and i can't stand it when one of my buddies says " no way you can make that!" If you don't try you never know if it doesn't work out my head feels better with a helmut on.

I think that tmo1620 should never have to wear a helmet, no one should try to educate him any further. The fact that you want to argue so much proves how important wearing a helmet is to most riders. I hope oneday you will see the importance of helmets, and yes making smart decisions and riding choices are very impotant when it comes to safety. To me no helmet is not the way, and we will always wear one. Please tmo1620 keep that helmet off, thanks.

i really can't see anyone getting worked up over whether he or anyone wears a helmet. it is a choice you make. it's not illegal, he is an adult and can make his own decisions. will suck if he makes the news, but i feel it should be a personal choice.
