Inboard VS Outboard

The winterizing of an inboard is not true of all inboards. Only the raw water ones need winterizing, which are most common. But there is the closed circuit cooling inboards that need no winterizing as they are like a car cooling system using antifreeze for the engine that in turn is cooled by a heat exchanger. The system is self draining from raw water the moment the boat is pulled out.
This is what my boat has and i've owned it since 2010, never have i winterized it. Actually used it in Jan a couple of times fishing on OK lake.

But after saying this i'm in agreement with other's, outboard is the way to go on a prop boat for what your looking for.

You may have a miracle inboard that doesn't need winterizing but that is not true. All inboards that I am aware of regardless of fresh or raw require winterizing. The heat exchanger and the manifolds are not self draining on either system. Curious what you have that "self drains".

Some but not all inboards have the antifreeze running through the manifolds instead of fresh water .
No draining required . Just FYI.

Why not a prop???




Joel loves mine, jets are slow and every time he's in mine he wants to rip


4 dudes and new prop and mine will do 65 trimed out

45 mph cruise at 3 grand trimed out

That's faster than his max in his tub
Sorry Jeff, I meant that I'm not interested in a 350 in a cruising/fishing boat.
If I was to go V8 I would probably go to a jet drive

I have a 16.5 ft 3 litre inboard that sits around way too much that sounds like what you might be looking for. Would also fit your budget. Pm if interested

Why is that???

A smaller engine boat, say a 3.0 l 135 hp or 4.3 190 hp have to work way harder to plain every time and don't have the cruise speed like a 300hp V8

If your not pinned all the time, I bet a V8 burns less gas, even trolling won't be much different on gas

And like I said, if motor goes there's lots of 305-350 for sale, where 3.0 and 4.3 cost more and are hard to find

Chestermere is only 15 mins away, not a great big lake, but still good for day trips

OHHYA, its a miracle boat LOL.
Its a jet with a 5.7. It has been out in -15 below a few times. In the water then out and parked wet out side for the next day..... Even has a heater in it, can you believe that. hahaha

Trashy, if your not in a big hurry, i bet you can pickup a nice boat for cheap at the coast if you don't mind the fact it might had gone in the salt chuck.
The salt, some times that a bad thing but some times it has no bearing on the condition, i spend part of my summer fishing the chuck and non of my boats you could tell it was in the salt. It boils down to the owner and how the boat was taken care of.

Here is an example, wife and i bought a 24ft Bayliner Trophy with a pos 150hp Force outboard motor. From a dude in Surrey that wasn't using it for $2500, pulled it home and took the motor in for trade on a much newer 200hp Yamaha efi motor. The motor with trade was like $5000.
The boat cleaned up really nice, actually looked new once cleaned up and i copper coated the hall.
Used it on the salt for 5 years, trouble free and sold it here in the Oganagan for $14,000
With that $$$ it helped to buy my 2010 jet new.

Sport jets don’t need winterizing

You are correct.

Was just assuming we were comparing prop outboards to prop inboards as I think that was OP's thinking?

Yah I think he’s wanting prop. Not sure about the older ones but newer outboards don’t need much winterizing. My Suzuki you just lifted it up and down a few times and that was it. I always put plumping antifreeze though it just incase.

Most inboards that I have been in do, and most of the newer out boards I've been in do as well. With the exception of outboards that are set up to be a tiller

-outboard all your weight is on the transom. So depending on how much you drive and bounce around on Alberta roads this can play a major factor.

-you still need to winterized a outboard to an extent. The new outboards are fool proof and painless.

- do you plan on running a kicker?

- definitely easier to swap out an outboard

- new outboards are going for $1000/10 hp
-used outboards are cheaper and more readily available in bc then they are in Alberta

-alberta is mainly a jet province. The north is anyways.

-if you can find a good outboard mechanic keep em close if your going used.

-enjoy. there’s nothing much better then being on the water on a boat.

Next boat will be Jet. Pigeon Lake is where is lived but frigg’n lake changed so much. Have wrecked a few props, some from lake dropping at end of season and not being able to get it off the lift.

Previous post was an outboard. Liked it too.
