Good morning from Cooke City and Bearclaw. I'm going to say in the last 36 hours, we've had approx. 24 inches. Yesterday storm dumped about 10 inches and it was a very heavy snow. The mountains received about 1.5 feet. This morning I'd say about 12-14 inches of powder snow in town. The AVALANCHE DANGER WILL BE HIGH. The snowman is still calling for cold, cold temps. To night below zero and the next 3-4 days we will not get above zero. BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

AVALANCHE REPORT: The avalanche conditions in the mountains around Cooke City are dangerous. About 18 inches of snow measuring 1.5 inches of snow water equivalency (SWE) has fallen in the last 24 hours with strong winds. This is a rapid load and the snowpack will be unstable. Yesterday, skiers reported winds moving snow around and covering their tracks quickly. Cracks shooting out from their skis were bulls-eye data that the snow was unstable. The snowpack in Cooke City has a couple of weak layers. The old snow surface is one, but another much deeper can also be triggered. Mark made two videos during his field days last week explaining the problems we are facing today (video 1, video 2). The bottom line is that it really doesn’t matter which weak layer will fracture. Heavy snowfall and wind are falling onto a snowpack that is struggling to support it. Human triggered and natural avalanches are very likely on steep slopes.

I'm reordering on AVY packs. I've brought in some new helmets, stop by and check them out. Along with HMK clothes.

If your looking for a room call the Super 8 and get the best price ever. It runs until Dec. 22,2013. Just don't forget to mention that you saw it on MUD and SNOW.

Good morning from Cooke City and Bearclaw. The snowman has disappointed everyone, when he sent this cold weather down upon us. The forecast still is calling for sub Zero temps. This morning it was 18 below and warming up to 6 below. Tonight the snowman is calling for 24 below.
I was lucky to speak with Doug from the Avalanche Center this morning. He is here to check out conditions. Doug stated that it is Highly possible to trigger an avalanche, but he felt that conditions over time will heal this problem. We'll know on the next couple avalanche reports.

I would love to go out and show you the area, but i'm like a few on here, I will stay in and stay warm, and not take a chance on the slopes.

AVALANCHE REPORT:
Dangerous avalanche conditions exist today. Recent slides are a major warning sign from Mother Nature that other slopes are unstable and only need a rider on them to produce an avalanche. Consider riding in meadows or on low angle slopes.

I will be carrying 110 octane race fuel. I will have it before Christmas.

Good morning from Cooke city and Bearclaw. This morning we found temps at 25 below with a high of -5. But wait, a warming trend is coming, we will see a high tomorrow of 2 above. The snowman is telling me that as the days go on the warmer its going to get.

AVALANCHE REPORT:Yesterday Doug investigated recent avalanches near Cooke City. Most were breaking 3-4 feet deep on northerly aspects following a large storm at the beginning of the week. Today more human triggered avalanches are likely especially on northerly facing slopes. These slides will break on weak faceted layers of snow found 1-2 feet above the ground. Avalanches today and this weekend will be tricky because they may slide when the first person rides on a slope or they might wait for the second, third, or even tenth person. The point is don’t be fooled by tracks on a slope. Seeing tracks just means someone got lucky. Today the avalanche danger is rated CONSIDERABLE.

I'm finally getting all the AVY packs in. I've gotten the ORTOVOX (ABS) packs, they are nice. The Snow pulse should be in the beginning of next week.
Remember, if you need to work on your sled or keep it warm at night, I do offer a garage to do all of this, with limited tools.
I also offer 27 years of experience working on sleds, come in and see me if you need a mechanic. I work on all sleds, specializing in Arctic Cat.

Good morning from Cooke City and Bearclaw. I was glad to see others help other sledders.
The snowman gave us some relief on temps. Woke up this morning to find a reading of 6 below. Its going to get better from here. Amazing we picked up a inch or two over night in town.

AVALANCHE REPORT:
Following a large storm last Sunday and Monday, many avalanches occurred near Cooke City mostly on northerly aspects. These slides broke 3-4 feet deep. It was much easier to trigger an avalanche in the middle of last week than it will be today. Now is a tricky time as the odds of triggering an avalanche slowly decrease. The snowpack might let us ride in avalanche terrain but it’s a game of Russian Roulette especially on northerly aspects. The snowpack has all the ingredients in place for human triggered avalanches. Weak facets 1-2 feet above the ground have shown their ability to fracture. For these reasons today, the avalanche danger is rated CONSIDERABLE.

WE have a few days left for the great super savings at the super 8, It lasts until Dec.22 2013. When you call, make sure you tell them you saw it on Snow and Mud. The motel has most rooms with flat screens and we do have direct tv in all rooms, it has over 100 channels, ESPN, 10 HBO channels.
We are also adding a few at a time, Refrigerators and microwaves.

Have a good safe weekend.

Good morning from Cooke City and the crew. Some thing happened to the snowman last night. The temps fell back down to 20 below. With a high today of 3 above. He is still saying its going to warm up by Thursday to the mid 20's.

AVALANCHE REPORT:Cooke City is a big place. The mountains are big, the snow is big, and more often than not the avalanches are big. Without the stress of recent snow, it is becoming harder to trigger avalanches. However, faceted (weak) layers buried 3-4 feet deep remain a concern, especially on north and east facing slopes. The main problem with this scenario is - if you do trigger an avalanche it will likely be large and destructive. Now is a tricky time to ride in avalanche terrain. Some slopes may be stable while others are not. It's important to remember that tracks on a slope do not equal stability.

Today, careful snowpack evaluation and conservative decision making are essential when riding in mountains around Cooke City. For this reason the avalanche danger is rated CONSIDERABLE.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Good morning from Cooke City and Bearclaw. This morning we find our temps at Zero, with a high around 10 above. The snowman is still calling for warmer temps tomorrow and Thursday. At this time we've picked up several inches of snow and its still lightly coming down.

AVALANCHE REPORT: Wind-loading over the last 36 hours has changed the stability for the worse.Winds are blowing at the ridgetops and also cross-loading slopes at mid elevations. I expect more natural avalanche activity today on wind-loaded slopes. Managing avalanches today is simple: stay off of wind-loaded slopes. If you see recent avalanche activity, go somewhere else. The same goes for collapsing or shooting cracks. These are simple, yet unmistakable signs of instability that should not be ignored.

Given the recent avalanche activity, new snow and strong winds, today’s avalanche danger is rated CONSIDERABLE on all slopes that are wind-loaded. Slopes not affected by the wind will have a MODERATE avalanche danger.

I've had a lot of calls if I refill Avy Packs. I do refill the BCA and SNOW PULSE tanks. The garage as been busy with guys working or storing their sleds over night. If you need a tool, stop in and I will loan you what you need at no charge.

The bakery's Biscuits and gravy are on the top of the list so far this week.

Don't forget to take advantage of the great special we are running at the Super 8, best we've ever did. Just say you saw it here when you call in.;)

Have a good week and be safe.

Good morning from Cooke City and Bearclaw. The sun is out and the temps are souring into the upper teens. The low tonight will be 5 below and temps tomorrow in the mid 20's. The out look for fresh snow is only 20%. At this time the riding is great.

AVALANCHE REPORT: My advice is to stay away from all the gullies since they have wind-loaded snow that will very likely avalanche. Be careful climbing underneath them and be especially wary about triggering a slide onto someone below. Small avalanches that would be inconsequential to a skier are fatal to an ice climber. Outside of the ice climbing zone, the snowpack in Hyalite is deeper and more stable, but today’s winds will continue loading slopes at the higher elevations. The avalanche danger today is HIGH on all wind-loaded slopes and CONSIDERABLE on all others.

Bakery will be doing the PRIME RIB DINNER again this year for NEW YEARS. I'll let you know on the date on the next post. You will need to call and make a reservation for it. I would also like to add that I do rent Sleds and AVY gear if your in need of such Items.

Good morning from Cooke city and Bearclaw. This morning we woke up to 8 above and we should see temps in the mid 20's. The snowman is calling for a 40% chance of snow on Saturday.

AVALANCHE REPORT: Snowmobiler triggered a 3 foot deep slide on a NE facing slope near Round Lake near Cooke City. Fortunately he was able to pin the throttle and ride off the slab as it was breaking.
◾Also near Cooke City, large naturally triggered slides were seen just inside the wilderness boundary on different aspects near Goose Lake.
Today is a good day to remain conservative. There is a lot of uncertainty with the snowpack right now, and we are still assessing the effects of last week’s extremely cold weather. However, recent avalanches are clear evidence of unstable conditions on many slopes. For this reason human triggered avalanches are likely and the avalanche danger is rated CONSIDERABLE.

The bakery will have the PRIME RIB DINNER on NEW YEARS EVE (12-31-13). The prime will come with baked potato, salad, garlic bread and dessert. MMMMMMMMMMM. So if your going to be here, call to make a reservation for that night.

Lots of guys have taken advantage of the great deal at the Super 8. I'm going to extend this great saving until Dec. 24.

The garage has really been busy with over night storage and me working on sleds.

Good morning from Cooke city and Bearclaw. Sorry for not posting yesterday, but went and picked up my new rental sleds. The snowman gave us about 2-3 inches of powder yesterday and its lightly snowing at this time. What's new in Cooke, the groomer is stuck in Round lake and the track hoe is stuck going up to get it out. Not sure what the plan is.AVALANCHE REPORT:The snowpack is not uniform. It changes drastically from mountain range to mountain range, slope to slope, and in some cases, the snowpack structure can change significantly over an individual slope. This is known as spatial variability, which can make riding in avalanche terrain a tricky proposition.Today the avalanche danger is CONSIDERABLE on all wind loaded slopes where human triggered avalanches are likely. Slopes without a wind load have a MODERATE danger but should still be approached with caution.Don't forget about the PRIME RIB DINNER on New Years Eve. Call for a reservation. The Snow Pulse AVY packs are in. I've got the pro and the vest. Stop in and check them out. __________________http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick...02875&site=riwhttp://www.cookecitysuper8.comhttp://www.bearclawsalesandservice.comhttp://www.usalivewebcam.com/bearclaw.html

Good morning from Cooke city and Bearclaw. We have temps in the middle teens and should see temps rise to the lower 30's. The snowman is calling for a 20% chance of snow until Wednesday, then we will see 60%. We picked up about 2 inches of snow yesterday.
The good news, they got the groomer out of Round lake and the trackhoe off the trail.

AVALANCHE REPORT:Today, the light is not green for riding in avalanche terrain. The snowpack continues to display obvious signs of instability.
At this point in the game all slopes should be considered suspect, especially those that have been recently wind loaded. Fortunately, there is a solution to this stability problem. When stability is the question – terrain is the answer. Making smart terrain selections will be the best way to have a fun and safe day of backcountry skiing/riding.

Today, the avalanche danger is rated CONSIDERABLE on all wind loaded slopes. Slopes without a wind load have a MODERATE avalanche danger.

The town was busy this weekend. I would like to thank every one for coming and having a good time. We look forward to see you again.
Christmas is 10 days away, make sure you have all your shopping done.

Bearclaw has NEW style hoodies and T-shirts coming in Monday, along with the standard ones.

The special at the Super 8 is on till the 24th of Dec. Make sure when you call in you tell them that you saw it on SNOW and MUD.

Good morning from Bearclaw and Cooke city. I would like to thank Jacob Mom for posting a few pictures of the area and staying at the Super 8 Motel.
The temps don't seem to want to warm up, but the snowman is tell me different. The temps are going to raise to the mid 20's during the day and in the teens at night. We do have a 40-50% chance of snow the rest of the week.
I'm going to add a second thread for those that need it.

AVALANCHE REPORT: I really want the avalanche danger to come down. I really do. But the snowpack is not cooperating. Avalanche activity and signs of instability cannot be ignored and the evidence feels a bit overwhelming. We had a rider trip an avalanche on LULU yesterday. He did deploy his avy pack, but wasn't buried, he was really a lucky person he wasn't. He stopped in and had his tank refilled and stated he would be careful from now on. It did shack him up, be safe when you are riding here in Cooke city. ◾Natural avalanches are still releasing around Cooke City (SE Republic Peak, Cache Creek, Amphitheater, Scotch Bonnet and Henderson). The past days activity is bulls-eye information that the snow is unstable and human triggered avalanches are likely. Throughout our advisory area the avalanche danger continues to be rated CONSIDERABLE.

If your looking for Avalanche equipment I've got it or other great items, like helmets, coats, bib's, gloves, boots, hoodies, t-shirts, belts.
