Contour have just announced their latest helmet cam called the . The Contour Roam replaces the Contour HD 1080p as their entry level helmet cam. Visually it looks very much like all the other Contour camera however there are some new features (along with some missing old features). The major new feature that they are pushing is the Contour Roam is waterproof to 1m (compared to the splashproof rating of the other cameras). While this will provide some piece of mind in the snow and mud, it still doesn't make the Contour Roam a watersports camera. Surfers, wakeboarders, etc will see much higher short term pressure spikes and will still need the optional waterproof housing that Contour say will be coming out later.
The will shoot full 1080p video, however the 720p @ 60 frames per second mode has been removed, which means no more slow motion videos which is a shame. The lens is the new 170 degree wide angle lens that features on their top-of-the-line Contour+ camera which is a welcome change. The other major change is the battery in the Contour Roam is non-removable, which will possibly be a deal breaker for a lot of people. The battery life will be around 3 hours, although this will decrease in winter conditions. It seems like a really odd decision - how many cameras out there don't have a replaceable battery? The thing to keep in mind is the price tag ($219 in Canada) which does make this an entry level camera. Is the increased waterproofing worth the move to a non-removable battery? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
