The 4 strokes definately require more maintenance than the 2 smokes. Oil changes are often, and valve clearances need to checked at least once or twice a season depending how much riding, agressive style etc...If something goes wrong with a 4 stroke, it can get expensive to repair. With your budget a 2 stroke may be the anwser for you. A 125 2 stroke is no xr85, as the power is completely different= fun. As stated you can still find them. Good luck !

It all depends on you. Im so torn b/w a 125 2 smoke and a 250 four stroke. Iv have owend and riddin both for a while. I picked up my CR 125 for 1500 spring of 2008 and put $500 into it and it was the most dependable bike ive owend. I now am riding a 2008 yz 250f. Wich do I perfer? 2 stroke for trails, 4 stroke for MX. You cant beat a 125 in the bush if its well maintained and jetted properly. They are light and FUN to ride. All of my 4 stroke everything has overheated and ive had problems with in the slow techy parts of the bush.

Here is my 2000 CR 125R..

125 no question. I wouldn't recommend a 250f to a first time buyer as they can be a pain to fix and maintain for someone with little or no mechanical experience. Forgive me if I'm being presumptuous but most 15 year olds do not have the know how to keep these things running. At any rate you won't find a 250f in that price range that isn't a complete pile. A 125 would be a great starter bike...cheap to fix, easy to start, lightweight and plenty fast.

you will probaly hurt yourself with a 250 they hit very hard and you would find the power really hard to control . stick with the 125 2-stroke this will be the best option for you. based on your age as the guy said above 4-strokes are more advanced motor and require more specialized maintentance. enjoy remember to watch yourself 125's go pretty good too.

also a 125 will teach you to ride faster and better bike control then if you just jump straight to a 250f. you have to be on the pipe to go fast. i find i get lazy with my 250 2 stroke all the time. but just my opinion.

there is no kx 150. there is a ktm 150 sx wich is like a 125 on "roids" but thats even too much. 97 yz isnt bad but try to get above a 2000.

The 150 KTM looks just like my 200. This the off road/woods model. It's X-cellent but too much as it is much faster than a 125. The 105 is pretty quick and has good suspension too. My neighbour has one.

What kind of question is this... 2 stroke all the way... I f i were you i would get an old 250 2 stroke cause they are tanks... Don't care what every body says of it being to big for you and practice... Start small and move up... At 4 i was riding an xr 100 and by 10 i was riding my dads wr 250 x which is an enduro version of the yz 250... For 7 years now ive been riding/ a 250 2 stroke... Ive even got a 1997 kx 500(2 stroke)... And if you fall great thats how you will learn...

Go with a 250 2 stroke just get used to the bike, don't go ball out on the first time out and you'll be all right + the 250 will outlast a 125 2 stroke and you don't have to upgrade in 6 months cause the 125 doesn't have enough. 4 strokes are expensive to rebuild stay away from them.

If you are looking to ride tight, technical bush I would run away from a 125. Trust me, I've done it.

250's are way easier to ride once you know the power characteristic. Also, the newer ones are a lot more linear then the old 90's ones. Powervalves and tuning have really changed what people think 2-strokes are.

I'ved owned a 01-YZ125, 04-RM250, and have a 08-KTM250. I've rode lots of 250's and 200's. Actually those 200's impress me quite a bit in the fun factor.
