If going 174 I wouldn't go 3 inch. Go 2.5 . Much better all around . Better cooling and the performance is so close I don't thing you could measure it. Watched two same sleds last year as far as power, one with extended case and 3 inch and one with 2.5 and the 2.5 did every bit as good as the other.
In a 163x3 between the two I can't comment as haven't seen the difference.
Thought I would add also that I have went 174 x 2.5 then 174x3 with 7 tooth drivers and have went back to 2.5 in that tells you anything.
This is on a 800 Doo but take it for what its worth.
Cheers

Isn't a 163x3 a lot less work and money than a 174x2.5?

I'm running the 162 x 15 x 3" on my 2012 Pro and I love it too, it works great in the deep, boondocking, exploring, climbing. Not your best low snow alternative though. Spring riding moves it down the scale a notch but if you can live with that it's worth it! I will do it again on my next Pro. On this sled I put in the Avid chaincase and lost some of it's flickability, that I wouldn't do again, smaller drivers and a re-gear.

You need to remember that you dont always have the big powder to ride as much as we would like. The 174 works better of course for the big pow days, but I can keep up to the 174 with my 162 in almost all other conditions.

I would think a 174 is a big track to turn with a stock 800 or not? It would obviously float better, but would you be able to hold enough track speed with the stock power plant to make a big enough difference over a 162?

So from what I'm seeing the 3 inch 162 is the way to go. Anyone run the c3 belt drive with avid drivers for this 3 inch ? Just so you can change the gears with the c3 to gain your track speed back ?

I'm running this set up with the RK Tek Drop in kit... I talked to Kevin at C3 before I put in the track and he said there was no need to re-gear because it was pretty much an even swap with the 7 tooth drivers to get the optimum gear ratio... Last year I was getting 43-44mph track speed on a climb;, this year with the X3 and Team Rooster weights
I'm getting 45 mph consistently when climbing.
