So, my '98 Camaro Z28 finally sold and I now have the money to start looking at sleds. I found a nice 2007 Summit XRS. It is actually owned by a forum member here. I haven't gone and looked at it yet, but the pictures on Kijiji and description of it seem good. Here is the Kijiji link. 2007 skidoo rev xrs | snowmobiles | Edmonton | Kijiji

I also have a family friend who has a 2008 800 Dragon. It has had all the engine updates done, it is piped, has V-Force Reeds, and has a power commander. The Dragon is $5,000 and has 1500 miles on it.

So, 2007 Summit XRS or 2008 800 Dragon?
if you buy the xrs make sure the crank cases are not the stock ones as the problem with 07 skidoo 800 motors was that the crank cases were out of spec, so when the crank is heating up from running the motor the crank will expand and there is not enough clearence in the stock crank cases causing the crank to seize. Just saying it happened on my 07, and alot of other 07's as well, i ended up getting a reman 08 motor and problem solved

well, this is all just speculation but ;)....Bearing clearance was the issue due to the difference in the HO (2006) to the 800R (2007+). No one sled is immune from what I have seen and pulled apart, no matter what time of year it was built. Seems to be more related to the sled itself, combination of parts and operation/warm up. XRS, X, Adrenaline, etc. The clearance issue was (suspected) due to the water cooled bottom ends on the 2007's, the case expands and preloads the bearing when the water temps were too cold or fluctuated with hot and cold coolant flowing into the motor. Once the break-in is over, the fuel leaned out and the parts got hotter. Lots of these engines failed quick and within a few miles of the trailer, others maybe got lucky until the ISOFLEX ran out, the bearing wore more and got hotter, then spun in the race. Some engines were fine and never had issues. I've had lots of speculation as to why...my theory is that the ones that lasted were probably warmed up better than others on occasion.

There was discussion around mineral oil being better for the 07, as it broke down and allowed the bearings to wear a little more, thus increasing the bearing tolerance and thereby decreasing the preload. Crank run out was an absolute must to check when buying these sleds. Sellers may not know that it is out of spec and may not be misrepresenting the sale, its just a fact of life with these engines.

The supporting info for this is that in 2008, the bearing clearance was increased (0.0002"), the synthetic oil was spec'd to accomodate that larger clearance and minimize wear now that the bearing clearance was larger, and the 2008 R's also had a thermostat to control the temperature. IMO the best thing you can do for a 2007 R is install the 2008 T-stat, always let it warm up well and run mineral oil in it. If you've got some miles on the sled then its probably fine and not too much worry, as its been heat cycled, now you just gotta watch the ISO and re-grease as necessary.

The bearings have pins in them so they dont spin and the crank is welded also. The main issues are fixed with the new cranks from snowX

That was just something I read or heard years ago. Warm up is the key to any motor lasting!

Well, if Vance's XRS sells, it'll make the decision easier hahaha....although I would've liked to come see it, but as he said....cash talks. Good luck with the sale, Vance. :)

I would consider selling my Iguana too...... I bought it new in 12, from Trevor at Bruce's RV & Polaris in Medicine Hat. Trevor aka Rhodesie (on this site) knows my sled inside and out. He is the Service Manager/Salesman and a good friend, for Bruce's Polaris division. But I would want closer to the 7000 - 7500 range........

Thanks everyone for letting me know what you have, but I think I have it pretty much set in my mind that I am going to get the XRS or the Dragon and as Vance has a guy coming to look at his XRS on Saturday, I'm guessing the decision to go with the Dragon will be made for me haha. I'll let you guys know what I end up going ahead with.

Well, looks like I'm getting a Dragon......my friend's Pro RMK will be "Drag'in" it out for me lol.....I'll post pictures when I actually pick it up. It sucks that it's July. I take delivery of my 28 foot snowmobile trailer and pickup the Dragon on Tuesday. It's going to be a long few months staring at it lol.

$5,000. It's a 2008 with a 155" track. It has 1500 miles on it, had all the engine updates done. Has a power commander (I think that's what it's called???....it's the thing that gets rid of the lean spot in the mid range), V-Force reeds, and pipes. I know you had the turbo dragon for sale for $5750, but I don't think I'm an experienced enough rider or have enough mechanical knowledge to have a turbo sled. Just curious, but did you sell the XRS?
