Whats a good starter bike?

Hey, I am looking to get a bike, 500cc - 750cc, nothing bigger, I have little experience in riding motorcycles. Plan on taking a two course as well.

I see on kijiji lots of older (1988ish) bikes for sale around $900 - $1800 (Yamahas, Kawasakis etc...) I wouldn't be driving it far, just riding in the evenings or very early mornings when few are on the roads....

Are these older bikes good starter bikes, do they need to pass a safety? I don't mind some tinkering with them (I own a Brute Force, so I'm used to tinkering, lol)

The nice thing about an older bike is that you won't feel so bad when it goes down on it's side!!!

I have an 80's Honda Magna 750, you can pic them up for cheap and are reliable as can be. Mine has 65000 kms on it and runs like a top. I see plenty of them on the road still, I took mine through BC last year with no problems, I think I paid 1500 for mine about 8yrs ago.
