I've crossed the river up the road from there a few times. It freezes in clumps like that for some reason. Only river I've ever seen do that.

Maybe a mid winter break up and refreeze? Had some aventures up there, 16 tow hills in 40km.

In 1979, 4 of us from a powerline company were sent to Norman Wells for two weeks about this same time of year to do electrical connections on high voltage transformers. These transformers were on the islands on the MacKenzie River. We had to be helicoptered to the islands in the morning and they would pick us up when we radioed back for pickup. We were told that the river could break at any time and that we would be the last ones to be picked up as there was drilling going on at other islands and they had priority over us. Ya we were nervous. On our last day of work the river ice started to break and move up onto the shore of the island we were on. The noise was incredible and the sight of 4-5ft thick ice sliding up onto the island was unreal and scary. We were told that the town puts on a yearly lottery as to when the ice will break, winner takes the pot. Was quit the experience.

Not to be a Debbie downer, but this happens nearly every year there. Yes some years more impressive than others. Any community that lives around major systems like that experience the same situation. Its business as normal....... unless it rains, thats where things get interesting

I lived in Norman wells as a kid around then. Old man welded at the refinery. Remember riding in jet boats to those islands.
