Studded on the rear. You do not want the rear sliding out on you in a turn or on the highway. You can maintain better control with the rear axle having a dragging effect rather than the front digging in and the rear coming around.

In the province of BC you can only use studded tires on the steering axle of a rearwheel drive vehicle if you have studs on the rear as well. In other words if you only stud one axle, it must be the rear.
