I did my seat cover last year. I removed all the stitching in the top and traced the original out on to new vinyl. Once I had the original piece mapped out I re-drew the pattern slightly smaller, so it would stretch out nicely over the foam. Make sure to use heavy needles (ei leather or denim needles).

If you're just looking to repair the tear. Use a curved upholstery needle and heavier thread to bind it. Seal it with some marine goop after...
