Medicine lake gaswell sites

Hey All,

I'm planning on heading to medicine lake this weekend with some family. Only been there a couple of times now. Last time we went we camped in the big main area down at the bottom of the road. When we were out for a ride we ended up going by a couple gas well sites that were about halfway back up the main road. There were people camping in these sites and I thought those were some great spots away from the main site and nice and quiet.

So here's my question - Are you actually allowed to camp at those spots? Or is there a chance someone is going to show up halfway through the weekend and ask us to move?

We have camped in those spots also.
I believe the one large area on the north side used to be a building site or something.

As an oil and gas operator I have to ask you to leave as per company policy but as long as you are respectful and as far away as you can be from the well head and facility’s I honestly don’t see a problem. I wouldn’t consider it if the well is sour. Be mindful of your fire and venting instrumentation and you should be fine.

Dad was a gas well operator so I know a little about these things, and oh yeah, we'll be as far away from the well head as possible. How would one know if it's a sour well though?

A sour well should have a sticker on the lease entrance sign indicating as such. A sweet well will have a flammable sticker.

Personally I would stay away. Any one number of things could happen or happen just after you leave or maybe vandals strike before your there. If someone knows you are or have been there guess who will be getting a knock on their door. Plus with venting and flaring could be a issue. Big area like that there must be a good spot to set up.

Depends on the size of the lease, I personally would not camp on a gas lease unless there was alot of real-estate to park very far away from the process area. Your technically on private property and could have a weekend ruined if a operator asks you to leave.
