When in Cadomin, we stayed beside a group that had a fuel tank with a transfer pump as part of the 5th wheel. So that got me to thinking. is there any legal reason why I couldn't take an old Suburban fuel tank (120Lish) and mount it under the deck of my car trailer? Add an electric fuel pump, and get rid of the 5 gas cans I need to haul around? Nothing takes up more room than gas cans and helmets. I would think as long as it is grounded to the trailer, and the battery on the trailer is grounded, there should be no issues????

I heard it's not even legal to travel on the highway with fuel in a factory trailer fuel station, let alone a custom installation. On the highway you have to have zero fuel in the trailer fuel station. Again just rumour so be nice if someone can clarify this. Makes some sense to me; my trailer fuel station is at the left rear corner of my trailer pretty unprotected and I travel with it empty in case someone smashes into that corner kaboom and I'm found liable....

Fuel stations are legal as long as they comply with Z240 Rv code book

and how or where would this Z240 Rv code book be located? Doesn'm make sense to have a fuel tank that can't be filled untill you get to where you need the fuel?? If you have the book, can you scan it?

higer'n, thanks but I cant quite read it. I will try later at home.

We normally have 2 cans in the truck, and 3-5 strapped to the trailer... never had an issue with 5-0, but sure would prefer to hide the fuel from those who don't like to pay for it. often thought of having one full of water or something just incase :)

This topic comes every once and awhile. The small container law on the TDG is different between gas and diesel. Read up on the law and get familiar with it. So there is no confusion.

fill one with water and throw a couple of oz of gas in with it. gas floats to the top if they bother to sniff before they steal.

I go and fill up 5-8 5gallon jerry cans (the red ones) about 2-3 times a week......I also drive around everywhere with them strapped down on my flat deck with one ratchet tie down......been stopped for everything under then sun but have never even been questioned about them from the cops.........I now have bought a new plastic red jerry can that holds 100l of fuel.....its a fuel station on wheels.......will have to see what happens with it plus the 8 other jerry cans........

100L of fuel in one can would be nice. How much? where'd you get it?

I may have solved my problem. My 1 ton crew cab has the spot at the back for a spare tire, but mine won't fit, they are too tall, and won't fit between the frame rails. So I am going to install a 40 gallon tank for a suburban, with an electric fuel pump, a ball valve and a switch. should work pretty good, and give me a "tidy tank" for the truck, not take up space in the box, or on the trailer.
