General Motors announced a new community charging program to install up to 40,000 Level 2 EV chargers across Canada and the U.S..

GM anticipates working with its dealers to expand access to charging in local communities including in underserved, rural and urban areas where EV charging access is often limited.

This initiative is expected to begin in 2022 and is part of GM’s recently announced commitment to invest nearly $750 US million to expand home, workplace and public charging infrastructure through its Ultium Charge 360 ecosystem.

Through the Dealer Community Charging Program, GM plans to work with its dealers to deploy Ultium charging stations (EVSE) at key locations in the dealer’s respective communities, including workplaces, multi-unit dwellings, sports and entertainment venues and college and universities, among others.

These charging stations will be available to all EV customers, not just those who purchase a GM EV.

GM is also announcing that its new line of three Ultium-branded AC Level 2 smart charging stations will be offered to customers to provide more home or commercial charging options and help make EV charging more widespread.

“These two initiatives are part of our plan to put everyone in an EV, making access to charging even more seamless than before,” said GM President Mark Reuss.

“We want to give customers the right tools and access to charging where and when they need it, while working with our dealer network to accelerate the expansion of accessible charging throughout the U.S. and Canada, including in underserved, rural and urban areas.”

Just wait till charging your EV becomes a subscription service and power rates start shooting through the roof. These companies are about making money. They re not dong this out of the goodness of their heart.

Forgive my ignorance, are all the charging plugs compatible for each brand of vehicle? Or does you Tesla have a bag of adapters for different charging station?

I wish I could say that all the chargers are the same. There's basically 4 types of chargers in Canada/USA.
CCS- This is every non-tesla fast DC charging 50-350KW
Tesla- DC fast charge up to 250KW AC charge at 11KW (Tesla AC charger has 9 different interchangeable plugs for use from 120v house plug all the way up to a welder plug)
Chademo(Nissan Leaf) - DC fast charge at 50KW <-- This is obsolete now but they are still building chargers for it.
J1772- AC charge from 1kw to 16kw depending on what the car can handle. These work in the CCS outlet. For Tesla you need an adapter to use J1772.

Common sense would say well how the hell did we end up with 4 different kinds of charger ends? It's a lot like early cell phones where every single brand had it's own proprietary charge cord.

Well, don't even know what to say about that. You'd think the manufactures would have thought about that before hand? lessons learned from the cell phone world?

I think it'll be just like wifi, Bluetooth, eventually a group will be formed to create and implement a standardized charger. Hopefully it happens sooner than later.

Smarthome devices should also be on that list. It would be nice to have a protocol that all smart appliances could operate on.

Europe made it law for ccs to be the standard there. Mode 3/y are made with built in CCS. model S/x still use tesla style but there is a CCS adapter. Tesla chargers in Europe have both plugs.
