We have one. yes they are geared low. Fuel mileage is low but is expected when running a 4.88 rear end! I believe only the 4.44 and 4.88 rears end are the only option for the 5500. What is its use going to be? highway cruiser not a great idea, but as a work horse, towing machine, mech rig, welding rig, it would be a good choice. available PTO, big brakes ect

never hand calculated. but put it this way, I can see 1000-1100 on a 240L tank and my 3500 with 3.73 rear end on 37's can see 850-1000 km on a 130 L tank, so im guessing its around 6-10 MPG at best. also never have done any long hauls empty, always towing something.

A 2 speed rear end would be nice get the rpm down for hwy most of my loads are long but light. My 09 freightshaker sees 5 to 6 mpg would be nice to see 10 to 12 with this dodge. Maybe a tuner would help ? Anyone know of a good mpg tunner for a 08 dodge 5500 (this is what im looking at to buy)

Yes we have the H&S blackmaxx on the 5500, with a cold air intake and DPF delete with stacks. it does help. I dont drive the truck, as its in alberta now for the last 2 yrs so its hard for me to get you accurate fuel mileage.

If thats what your after, and im a true dodge guy, go Sterling bullet. Same truck with 10 times the back up as far as warranty if it goes down. Your taking it to the grown-ups when it needs love! Western Star dealer up here sells them and they have 20 techs, as to the 3 at dodge..... I believe you can get an auxiliary gear box to drop to 3.55-1, aftermarket box.

So if your loads are light and long, why do you need a 5500. Go with a good 3500 and still good to pull 15000 all day long. Good luck
