Changing the seat on a powder special

Our daughter is going to be riding our 2000 powder special this year but she doesn't like how wide the seat is. We got a dirt bike seat to replace the seat. We will fab up some brackets etc. but we are wondering how close to the tank can you cut that seat off at?

go onto ronnies.com and you can see a parts break down, somemodels have the seat attached to the fuel tank so it could be a job n ahalf....
