COQUIHALLA (NEWS1130) - A 43-year-old Maple Ridge man is dead after an avalanche struck a group of snowmobilers near Tulameen, south of the former toll booths on the Coquihalla Highway.

Twelve snowmobilers were in the area when the avalanche was triggered at about noon Tuesday. The victim was swept down the side of a mountain. The others were successful in finding him, but weren't able to revive him.

Police say the man had been out with his father and other extended family members from the Lower Mainland.

VANCOUVER—A snowmobiler from Maple Ridge was killed in an avalanche near the summit of Coquihalla Pass at noon Tuesday, the third snowmobiling death in B.C. this week.

RCMP spokesman Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said the 43-year-old man was among a group of 12 snowmobilers travelling along a trail northwest of Tulameen when he was struck.

Cpl. Moskaluk said all of the group, which included the victim’s father, were properly equipped with rescue recovery gear and were all wearing GPS locator beacons.

One member of the group headed to the Coquihalla toll booth area for cell coverage to summon help, while the remainder began searching for the buried man.

The machine was partially buried and the group used a beacon locator to extricate the buried man.

Efforts to revive their friend failed.

Mounties in Hope, B.C. received the report and immediately began the search and recovery effort with help from Princeton RCMP. Search and rescue teams from Hope and Chilliwack mustered at the toll booth shortly after the call, and snow conditions were evaluated in a flyover by an avalanche technician.

It was decided a recovery of the man’s body would not happen until Wednesday for safety reasons.

Search and rescuers have yet to recover the body of a 43-year-old man from Maple Ridge, B.C., who died in an avalanche while snowmobiling near the Coquihalla Highway on Tuesday.

RCMP and search and rescue teams from Hope and Chilliwack Search and Rescue are expected to attempt to recover the body on Wednesday.

"The man's name is being withheld at this time to permit family to notify extended family members of the tragic loss. The RCMP victim assistance workers are currently providing support to the affected family," said Cpl. Dan Moskaluk, senior media relations officer in Penticton.

"The deceased was with his father, along with another extended family member amongst the group who were all from the Lower Mainland area of B.C." he said.

The slide occurred at around noon, northwest of Tulameen, as the group of 12 sledders was travelling along a network of trails around Coquihalla Lakes, according to police.

The avalanche came down between the group, sweeping the man down the mountain side. No other individuals suffered physical injuries.

While 10 members of the group immediately started searching for the buried man, one headed to the old Coquihalla toll booth area in order to get into cellphone coverage to call for help.

The snowmobilers quickly located the man's partially buried snowmobile, with the group using a beacon locator. But it took 15 minutes to dig out the victim and attempts to revive him with CPR failed.
Group was properly equipped

RCMP and local volunteer search and rescue teams soon arrived at the old toll booth location, but conditions were assessed with a fly over by an avalanche technician and it was deemed too unsafe to recover the man's body.

The avalanche risk for the area was rated considerable at the time of the slide.

All members of the group were properly equipped with rescue recovery gear and were wearing GPS locator beacons, said police.

The death is the third fatal snowmobile accident in B.C. this week. In one accident in Elko, west of Fernie, an unidentified 44-year-old man was killed when his sled went off an embankment and struck a BMX ramp on Monday.

In the second accident near Prince George on Sunday, another 44-year-old man was killed after running head-on into another snowmobile in the dark, while the pair were out sledding on a lake.
