2002 ram 1500, 5.9l gas.
Just had a code p0740 pop up.
Rpms seems to hunt on the highway sometimes.
Is there any way I can get away without a torque converter and an overhaul?
Can it be an electrical problem?

Sounds crazy but clean all your battery post and check for loose wires. Brother has fixed some minor tranny issues by doing that. Computers on these trucks take nothing to through them out of whack. But dodge trannys aren't pretty famous for failure

I think it's original.
The fluid looks and smells ok for the miles. 265k
It's slipping or shifting in and out of lock up sometimes so I'm kind of afraid it's mechanical.
I may do a flush and add a can of mechanic in a can.
Don't suppose it can hurt.

Seems that all tranny's have their quirks depending on assembly !

Some run year after year with not glitches as they get pounded on pretty hard with no oil changes, others that see oil changes and hardly tow any thing "could" fade out early in life,,, these is not saying that the abused tranny's don't pile-up either.

There are so many factors that dictate the longevity of what's going to happen, in some cases the tranny's out last the truck. so its a hit and miss.

Todays auto tranny's get their work outs from -40c and colder to +40c and above, stop and go traffic flow, some pulling heavy loads, other ripping along in race track mode.

I've had good luck with todays automatic tranny's as they are flooding the heavy truck market too. The big bed truck that tear out and set up drilling rig have been auto for 10 ish years, and we've seen many new tri-drive winch tractors showing up with Allison autos too.

Pros and Cons to either or of course.

I know one thing, my standard shifting days are done in personal owned units, and after running the new smart auto shift in heavy haul and hwy that stick shift days will be-gone in that area too...

Its the way of the future !

i see a few shops doing trans oil changes with just sucking oil out of pan and not changing filter or cleaning pan bottom. I'm not convinced that is the way to go!

No. No. No. New truck for me

LOL !!!

Either the dealer ship got the wrong price tag on the truck, or I fell a sleep for 40 years,,, it is 2016 isn't it ?

That unit is 3 x's the price I paid for my granary/ house 40 years ago,,, boy have times changed.
