84 phazer and 99 phazer...different engines?

hey guys!! just wondering if anyone knows if yamaha changed the engines between the 84 model and the 99 model? becauase i see alot of the 99 and up motors that are blown to smithereens!!!

i dont know about you , but i can only think of 3 bad engines , exciter , 96 and down vmax , and that phazer!!!
