That sucks. Ive heard 2 different stories on this myself. Some say it needs to be split, other say theres a way around it with minor removal of a few parts. Looks do-able. The starter works just fine on cold starts or after sitting (cooling down) after a ride. Other than that, when I stop for gas I have to pop start it. I am going to be rebuilding the carbs soon. Any luck with "bench" syncing them? It runs like a top, just sputters on takeoff & idle varies with warmth.

alot of older bikes have problems with the hot start while riding even my kinda bike still does it (2000 zx7r)

get ure carbs synced and ultrasonic cleaned and maybe new jets or needles and build her back together
also every now and than some carb cleaner in the summer works wonders
