Have a buddy that the dealer is telling him he needs $5k in EGR maintenance. The truck is out of warranty. Can he just remove the exhaust stuff and add a program or does the EGR stuff need to come off? He doesn't care about extra power at all, just wants reliability. Any gained fuel economy is a bonus.

What do you guys recommend for a programmer? This only needs to be a set and forget install.

CCS Tuning in Leduc

Thanks for the recommendation but not really looking for a shop. We got a buddy with a muffler/exhaust business that does that side of this all the time. Just would like to know the minimum you really need to do or is wise to do.

I should correct that it's a 2014 and there is no check engine light. The dealer is just saying that it will be trouble if he doesn't do the EGR service.

I have an old H&S Minimax that is locked to a truck that is long gone. Could it be unlocked and used on his truck? It is from around that year.

Should be able to leave the EGR stuff in place and the programmer just keeps the valves closed? Easier this way if you need to revert back to emissions legal.

$5K? Buddy needs to talk to someone else, anyone else. What’s an egr delete kit and basic programmer worth?

That's the way l did my LML. Exhaust delete and programmer. Unplug the unnecessary stuff.

Depending on your driving habits the 6.7 needs some EGR maintenance apparently.

JMCX, who do you recommend in Calgary? I've got a '16 Ram with 160,000 km's and think I'm headed down the delete route if I keep it...

Had my truck deleted at Dagger Performance in Calgary, great service, would recommend. 14' F350, went with a Bullydog programmer, was around the $2k-2500k mark as few years ago if i remember right.

Jared at Castle Customs, the shop phone number is 587-356-0706, tell him Brendon sent you. Or give him my username. See if it costs extra by name dropping me I’ve done business with them, and have ridden with Jared.

EGR Valve can open from exhaust pressure when turned off. Best to get a EGR delete kit which isn’t much money at all. And straight pipe exhaust, I put a full kit on a 2012 Cummins and it took less then an afternoon. Sends you a handheld EFI Live tuner, with a pre made tune specific for the truck, EGR delete, and exhaust. When I did it a few years ago it was under $1,500.

My dodge dealer did my complete delete including egr and runs the live tune, was just under 2000.00 it's a 2014 ram 6.7. It didn't gain much for hp but pulling my trailer to Dawson city and home I ran an average of 16.7-16.9 l/100.

I'm in the process of looking for options on my 14 Ram as my Turbo Acturator decided to take a vacation. I inquired about deletes for reliability. I've had to go the route of cleaning the EGR system once at about the 100K mark. Truck was idling a little rough and started to lose a bit of power. After cleaning, ran well again. I'm at 185K and the acturator crapped out. You can delete EGR and associated hardware. Some have told me you need a tune, some have told me you don't unless you want more power with it. I didn't look into it too much further yet, but was quoted about $2K for deletes with a tune. If I wasn't spending more than that on a turbo, I'd be considering it. It's amazing when you wash the truck, any water that goes in the exhaust pipe comes out as clean as it went in. When my 10 6.7 was deleted with an H&S tune, water came out pretty dark. That truck hauled the mail with a 60HP tune

Im in the exact same boat my 13 has 170k and actuator has been on its last leg for a bit. Where are you getting a turbo from? Cheapest I’ve found in the city is $2600, but bcdiesel is $2100. Alamo will rebuild for 2300 with new actuator but been telling me they are getting actuators in for 3 weeks now and gave up.

For delete I believe you need tune to stop CEL, but that you don’t need a programmer. I was told you can just have someone tune it and that’s it? I know I have no interest in extra power or a programmer. Also got to consider you’ll get a pretty good amount for the dpf I think I was told about $800? Parts for delete I think roughly $700 including new muffler.

if you go back to another VGT turbo make sure you keep your engine brake on at all times. This will ensure the actuator is constantly cycling the blades in and out of the rotor which will help keep them moving freely. There is also the option of just going back to the old school but then a guy would want a compound setup lol. As for tuning, you do not require a “tuner” but you will require a tune. There are plenty of options around available for tunes that can be flashed for you so it is a set it and forget it setup. You can search Kijiji for EFI LIVE or check with any of your local diesel shops. Don’t even hesitate on the delete.... just do it! Did mine at 98 000 KM just so it could stop breathing it’s own farts and she LOVES me for it! As for the dpf you will recoup probably $200-$250 but most of the scrappers will want to know the part number that is stamped into the side of the filter.

good luck!

EGR Delete is programmable. The physical delete just cleans up under the hood. The rest has to come out though (SCR & DPF if he goes that route). The NOx sensor on my '16 just started throwing codes indicating either a failed sensor, or DPF. I already had the DEF injector replaced under warranty at 90k. I always told myself I wouldn't spend money fixing the emissions on this truck. I just ordered up a delete pipe and EzLynk with tuning for under $1700 tax in. Looks like a very simple install. Can get a couple hundred bucks in scrap for the DPF as well.

Yup, my VGT turbo lasted 232k and was still fine when I parted ways with my 11 cummins, deleted at 14k, that was the first button I would push every time I started the truck.
