Two Phazer build!

Hey Guys

That time of year again (actually were a bit behind schedule) to start a new sled build, this year we are starting off with two. We have built an M8 Turbo, we have built a Dragon Turbo, and last year the controversial carbed Turbo XP build (which was our favorite thus far) so we decided we would go over to the dark side :eek: We are building two Yamaha Phazers. Some may be asking why (in fact probably a lot are asking why) Well, it is something we have wanted to get out of our system for a couple years now so we are going to! The first machine will be a N/A Phazer, with a bunch of custom mods, the second will be a supercharged Phazer with a couple tricks up it's sleeve! Our goal with these machines are to make the N/A sled something that can float well, and have that kind of torque that will allow you to be lazy on the throttle and still tractor out of the deep stuff (this one is being built for my wife) The goal with the S/C machine is to build an awesome boon docking machine, one with good low end grunt and something that is very nimble, built for playing in the tree's and creek beds, with the capability to still make a pull or two.

I know we could have started with a pro rmk, slapped a turbo on it and had an awesome machine, but the point of this is to try and get out side of the box and build a fun nimble machine, that will allow us to get creative with our fabrication skills.

When Yamaha entered the sport in 1969 with its first full production snowmobile, the SL351, the company brought oil injection and slide valve carburetors as standard features. Both are still used in modern snowmobiles. But although the SL351 had a role in snowmobiling, it was the 1984 Phazer that made the more important contribution to today’s snowmobilers.
The Phazer was a successful attempt to return to light weight sleds that could power over snow rather than through it. In fact, the Phazer proved very popular in deep snow areas because it was very good in mountain snows with its combination of above average power, lightweight design, easy steering strut-type suspension and ample traction.
Another aspect that the Phazer brought to snowmobiling was an attempt to centralize the rider mass closer to the sled’s center. The Yamaha seating position moved the rider a bit forward of the rear axle and made him more the center of the see-saw action of the sled. The Phazer also introduced an aerodynamically shaped and handlebar-mounted fairing with a smallish windscreen and enclosed headlamp. It was the first production handlebar-mounted fairing since the Alouette Super Brute in the early 1970s.
Perhaps the most important aspect about the Phazer is that it helped take Yamaha to Number One in sled sales, supplanting Arctic Cat, which had temporarily gone out of business.

I don't know if we can push the envelope that far, but it certainly gives us something to shoot for!

So what happened to the turbo xp, how well did it work? I've been wanting to do this to my 09 for a while but everyone talks me out of it and I dont want to lose reliablity or have to wrench on the thing constantly. Would love some details if you can spare them.

A fellow from Snowest saw the build online and wanted to purchase it, ended up in Alberta. Awesome machine would strongly recommend doing it. Just take your time and do the install properly and you will have no problems. I have heard of guys having all sorts of problems, but ours worked right out of the box, and was just an awesome machine. We would build another one without a second thought. Was it a complete kit you used or pieced together, its the fueling that was always a problem with the carbed sleds for turboing.

It was mainly a Turbo boyz, but with an aerocharger. We found the fueling to be the easiest by far on this vs the injected machines that we built. You down size your mains, so it ends up running crisper then stock on the bottom end, and then you install flowjets, dialing them in using your EGT gauges as reference. Worked awesome, never touched fueling from 1200 ft/asl all the way up to the top at 8500 ft/asl. Was an absolute blast to ride.

i rode my aunties phazer 2 christmas' ago for 3 days (was sledless that yr) .... And it was a hoot
sure under powered blah blah blah, but i was riding and i didnt care about anything else

Now if you could get a Phazer to handle a little better (being not so tippy), better running boards, not get the tunnel to ice up so bad and give it at least 140-150HP.....it would be even more fun

Really looking forward to these builds, keep us updated here

sure under powered blah blah blah, but i was riding and i didnt care about anything else

Now if you could get a Phazer to handle a little better (being not so tippy), better running boards, not get the tunnel to ice up so bad and give it at least 140-150HP.....it would be even more fun

Jump on snowest, lots of good reading over there, seems quite a few guys really like there's, main problem I believe was blown bellows and fuel reference, sounds like there reference pressure from the pipe which is higher then the airbox, which takes care of a lot of the issues had in the first years.

So we got a bit more progress on the first Phazer done HOLOMIS INTERNATIONAL : Phazer builds almost time to bring the second one in so that we can use the assembled sled as a reference on what we can change, while still maintaining the factory plastic body parts.
