Problems on Indian Reserve

These problems are everywhere not just reserves, seems like more and more people have lost the pride in going out and getting a REAL JOB and ACTUALLY WORKING HARD. Everyone thinks everything should be handed to them. I think that if your able to work you should no HAND OUTS FOR ANYONE. People complain there are no jobs but yet when was out the other day for couple hours saw over a dozen help wanted adds.

I grew up next to one of the larger bands in Canada (cowichan Van. Isle) and my brother was the contractor for building homes there............He retired a WEALTHY man let`s say,as the average life span was 2 to 5 years for a nice new split level bungalow. Some were trashed before completion multiple times !!

The problem lies in that they ( the band ) owns some very valuable land and it becomes the goose that lays the golden egg. It`s the gift that never stops giving ,so to speak....What happens is certain band members/families receive most of the money & power from are government and deal it out (or not) as they see fit . Here in lies the problem ,as it is up to the taxpayer to support the vast majority while a select few stalk away the majority of the allotted funds. This is why there is such a push to SELF GOVERN as it makes it even harder to get an accurate financial accounting. In this set up they hold the land, the majority get poorer each generation and the select few get wealthier. It has worked for years and Will continue to unless the system is fixed.......

Let me say i have grown up and known many natives and the ones who left the reserve are no different than any other person, in fact most of them have gone on to be great ,hard working people. However the ones left on the reserves are bitter, and lazy and are led to believe the white man wrecked there lives and forever OWE them a living. It is sad and true that there own people have caused more poverty than the white man ever did ........

The answer is IMO , you want to be treated like everyone else FINE. We appraise ALL your land and come up with a fair VALUE for every person.No more reserves ,you sell your land and it`s gone ,just like the rest of us . We calculate a ONE TIME payout based on the value and land/owners etc etc. We cut them a cheque..........You are now one of us.........Which includes Tax's/work/no casinos/no road blocks/no smuggling / etc etc.

This would end it and be best for everyone once and for all.............................

I am First Nations and proud of it. There is a lot of problems on reserves. First all i have worked everyday of my life since i was a teen. Lived off the rez sure i got discriminated against but i got the same treatment when i go back to the rez for a visit. Not all band members get free new houses alot of times they are passed down and you can get a new house if the council hasnt screwed up the band funds. My dad also has worked all his life, went and got a good education to become a school teacher. Got his degree and you think any school district would hire him no because he was an indian. So he worked construction. Saved money so he could buy a house you think he could get a mortgage no. My parents have been renting the same place for almost 40 years. My dad grew up in the sixties. Did you know an indian could not vote in an election till 1967. As for getting jobs the only way to do this is to leave the reserve as there are way to few jobs on the rez. And yes casinos are good if they are close to a city like the one at Enoch is. And they had to fight with the city to get city water for it. Any ways there are two sides to every story.

Worked with a few kids from Hobbema,some of the hardest workers I ever dealt with!(good sense of humor too,the odd racial jab in the oilpatch)They said they got called potato when they went home.

My opinion is best left in my head. However, I can say that for the most part I love teaching on the rez....

You spent any amount of time here? Stabbings are a regular occurrence in the bars here. We had a drive by shooting just two weeks ago no more than a mile away from the skate park. How many towns of 13,000 people have serious organized crime problems?

Brooks may not be as bad as some reserves like Hobema but has some serious issues.

Have a look at the Indian Act. It seems to spell out a different tale.
Particularily the AMENDMENTS 1881 TO 2000

What happened to all the money the band just got. It is about time accurate records are kept to find out where the money really does go. I wonder what a 200 year old elder would have to say if came back alive and seen what was happening on a day to day bases at the council.... it would be priceless.
