Sales Summary

  • February 2022 presented a notable decrease in sales when compared to February 2021
  • Total sales settled at an estimated 98,722 units sold for the month, down 12.4% when compared to last February
  • The SAAR reached 1.62 million, which was a decrease from February 2021 at 1.85 million but fell roughly in line with the figures over the past 10 months or so
  • In the previous year, it was March that showed significant sales growth over the disastrous March in 2020 and resulted in SAAR reaching a more normal level at 1.92 million

Canadian EV Registrations – Q3 YTD 2021

  • Zero emission vehicles – including plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles – have been increasing in market presence fairly steadily across Canada as a whole
  • ZEVs have grown to account for nearly 5% of new vehicle registrations in Canada as of the end of the third quarter of 2021
  • ZEVs accounted for 3.52% in 2020
  • Interestingly, despite the dramatic sales downturn in the spring season in 2020, ZEVs continued to gain market share relative to 2019 at a fairly steady pace
  • The other regions in Canada, not mentioned below, were notably behind in terms of both volume and ZEV registration percentage

Ontario ZEV registrations

  • Not quite as balanced with the removal of the provincial incentive in 2019 resulting in a sharp decline in ZEV adoption rates, down from a peak of 2.0% in 2018 to roughly 1.2% for 2019
  • ZEV registrations, as a percentage of overall registrations, increases in Ontario for 2020, reaching 1.75%, albeit still below the previous peak in 2018
  • However, by the end of the third quarter of 2021, ZEV registrations in Ontario accounted for 2.74% of total provincial registrations – a significant number given the overall volume of vehicles registered in the province

Quebec ZEV registrations

  • ZEV registrations increased noticeably by the end of the third quarter of 2021, rising to nearly 9% of total registrations
  • This was up from 6.81% in 2020
  • Strong incentive schemes at the provincial levels as well as provincial ZEV sales mandates have helped push adoption rates in Quebec forward

British Columbia ZEV registrations

  • Similarly to Quebec, ZEV registrations in BC climbed to 11.16% by the end of the third quarter of 2021
  • As a result, BC is the first province to breach the one tenth milestone for ZEV adoption
  • Much like Quebec, ZEV incentive schemes at the regional level – mixed with the federal incentive – helped the province reach this milestone

Retail Sales – Year End 2021

New Car Dealers

· Retail sales at new car dealers increased 18.4% in 2021 when compared to 2020

· Total retail sales reached $137.1 billion, up from $115.76 billion in 2020 and even up from 2019 at $132.29 billion

· Compared to the sharp increased in spring season, the fourth quarter of 2021 did not offer any dramatic increase with October down 0.9%, November up 3.2% and December up 10.0%

· Although the increases are more the result of per unit price increases and inflationary mechanics, retail sales at new car dealers reached a record high for 2021

Used & Other Motor Vehicle Dealers

· Retail sales at used car dealers increased 21.8% by the end of 2021, reaching $14.07 billion and reaching at least a ten year high
· Much like new car dealers, retail sales at used car dealers were driven up by inflationary forces and skyrocketing prices as massive demand shifted from new vehicle side of the market to the used side
· October retail sales increased 10.5%, November increased 19.0% and December was up 5.3% compared to 2020
· The largest increase, unsurprisingly, was seen in April at 221.0%
· Other motor vehicle dealers saw retail sales increase 15.0% in 2021

Automotive Parts, Accessories & Tire Stores

· Automotive parts, accessories and tire stores saw retail sales increase 10.8%, a comparatively mild increase compared to other parts of the automotive industry
· However, these stores saw an increase even in 2020 and are not working back from a decrease as much of the industry is, making the success in 2021 more notable
· October brought with it an 8.2% decline, November presented a 5.7% increase and December concluded with a 10.9% increase in retail sales

Gasoline Stations

· Retail sales at gasoline stations increased 24.4% in 2021, when compared to 2020
· During the pandemic in 2020, gasoline consumption fell as individuals were using their vehicles less due to lockdowns and work-from-home schemes
· While 2021 presented a significant increase, it was not quite up to the level of the previous peak in 2018 when retail sales reached $66.83 billion having reached only $64.11 billing for 2021
· Retail sales saw significant double digit increases all the way through to the end of 2021

I think they are doing well as people aren't tire kicking as much so less time invested to sell a vehicle, but they also have to pay good dollars to get any vehicles so I doubt they are making much more then usual. Also most dealers will end up loosing when the bottom falls out on whatever inventory they have at that time will be sold at a loss.

I can see this. The prices are stupid high on every vehicle. Unless you need a vehicle for work or some other reason why would you even think of buying one now? I would like a newer truck but there’s no way I am paying these prices new or used. Keep my old guy running for awhile.

New vehicle prices have not really changed. Dealers are slowly getting stock.
Or a person can order one.
It’s a great vehicle market now. Sell sell sell.
