I am looking a buying a summit for my son who is 15. He will use it for mostly trail riding and the occasional mountain trips. I'm looking between the years from 2004 to 2012. I don't wish to spend anymore then $4000.00. Is the newer chassis (2008 to 2012) better then the older sleds? Are the motors better in the newer chassis? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I would go withe newer the better, 1st year etec would be what I would look for , gets you away from carbed and into fuel injection . Both good sleds but the etec will start better and likely last longer. I had a 08 and a 09 XP and both were great sleds, stick too 153 or shorter and the kid will have a blast, here is my son on the 08 I had, the orange one is 09

I had a 07 and a 11 e tec but personally I never had any issues other than a stutter in my e tec was told the mapping needed an update so i just sold it but i would try to find 04 to 06 stay away from 07 and 08 s . I never had any problems with my 07 but heard lots from other s that did.

Buy a 600 rmk so u get fuel
injection and not the wife a$$ ski stance from the early xp chasis etec. I rode xm chasis for 7 years and any pro chasis rmk will be easier for a youngster to ride on. If your set on buying a doo then I would say try to find an xm with etec.

you will hear lots of people pushing for newer sled, or stay away from certain models, but for your son starting out and learning i would think a xp model would be great, (08 to 12). i found the xp rode and handled better than the 07 and older chassis, imo. look for a sled that is maintained and ready to ride that your confortable with the price.

I know of 2 600 summit sports, the cheap carbed sleds with 7000 and 10000 k on the engine and both are still running great. Extemely good on fuel and pull harder than you would expect.

If you keep your carbs clean I wouldn't hesitate to buy a ptek. Put a fuel filter inline on the early xp's. Change your plugs regularly. Mix 100:1 in the tank if the oil isn't upped from stock. I got lots of fun reliable miles from a 2010 summit xp and they can be picked up for a reasonable price.

What were the issues with the 2007 summits. I have found one that's in really nice shape and a good price, just wondering if they were a good machine?

Stay away from 07-08's. Lots of issues those 2 years. Best bet is a 2012 Summit 800 Etec or you may find a 2013 XM in your price range. Both great sleds
