Speeding a top concern for Canadians

A new poll conducted by the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) has unveiled a significant concern among Canadians about speeding in residential areas.

The concern is there even though many admitted to occasionally engaging in the behaviour themselves.

According to the CAA survey, nearly nine in 10 (88 per cent) of Canadians expressed deep worry about speeding in neighbourhood zones. At the same same time, one in five (22 per cent) respondents confessed to speeding in these areas at least sometimes.

The issue is further compounded by data showing that speed-related collisions, which latest federal government statistics show make up a quarter of fatal accidents, are on an upward trend.

“Canadians have a valid reason to be concerned about speeding,” said Ian Jack, vice president of public affairs at CAA National. “These accidents are preventable and we urge everyone to reduce their speed in 2024 to enhance safety for all.”

The Traffic Injury Research Foundation highlighted that traveling even 10 km/hr above the speed limit can increase the likelihood of a collision by 60 per cent, while only saving an average of four minutes per trip. Jack also reminded drivers that posted speed limits are meant for ideal weather conditions, a particularly pertinent point during Canada’s harsh winter months.

In addition to speeding concerns, the CAA poll also asked Canadians to identify other dangerous driving behaviours they engage in. The top five confessions included speeding on highways (45 per cent), using technology while driving (32 per cent), speeding in residential areas (22 per cent), driving significantly over the speed limit (19 per cent), and driving while excessively tired (18 per cent).

You would think the number one concern would be distracted drivers and driver who just Don't know how to drive. To me someone doing 5-10 over and paying attention to the road and knows the rules of the road is not as dangerous. If someone wants to test if the other driver knows the rules of the road, find an uncontrolled intersection and make sure you are on the right. See who stops first.

I say, don't drink and drive
You might spill your drink
Before you get behind the wheel just stop and think

You can take your chances
But there's so much to lose
Another bumpy road
There's so much wasted booze

We heard rumors that the government is thinking about removing posted speed limits and replacing the signage with posted times from point A too B...

If you arrive at your destination 1 1/2 minutes before the alloted time they will take 3 or 5 points off your total score of getting'er it done... lol

As a Canadian I feel there are bigger concerns in my life than speeding
Agreed.

It pisses me off that I get deemed a higher risk with my insurance companies because of it though. So I speed a bit? Big deal. I'm twenty some years claim free. Rate me on that. Make the people that can't drive worth a ch!t pay their share. Auto insurance shouldn't be socialist.

Insurance companies used to be this way but they figured they need to take more from all their customers I’d imagine.

Speeding equals taxes. That’s it. They want to clamp down on everything we do…the punishment is not education or excepting, just tax and fines. They will tax you for wiping your a$$ to fast if they could.

Who in the f'k wrote that POS article, someone who takes the bus? That individual needs to get the f'k out on the roads and see how fawktards cannot drive and yet they passed the road test, really:rolleyes: Speed limits are for ideal conditions ok, but what about ideal conditions and the fawktard going 70-87.5 in a 100km zone? or what about the fawktard that drives 25-30 under the limit cause it's raining, or 30 under because it's snowing. FFS there are so many over cautious not paying attention, stuber fawktards paying attention to there phone gps or car 14inch gps that they don't even know who the fawk is driving let alone driving themselves. Car manufactures get away with bigger screens yadda yadda but yet "Distracted Driving" is against the law, let alone you get caught and the Insurance corps hang you out to dry. Iam on the road 6 days a week and see so much chitty driving it's now become a pass the f'k before you become a statistic because they are nothing more than an accident waiting to happen. I also get the hood zones those are ok especially when around schools/such, but come on time frames need to in there not 7-9pm when every kid is at home nor in a park at that time, ffs even on a nice day that is a rare occurence now that i have seen, (xbox must b gooder).

Ya they are nice. They look kinda like a "poor mans" Bugatti Veyron. with a Lamborghini huracan front bumber. Bugatti and Lambo are made/owed by Audi or some thing like that.

Theres some fast trucks out there, it would take quite a bit to chase that bugatti down on the highway though.
