Took a short ride on the south side of the river from Warspite. About 8" of snow but due to the cold it hasn't settled, meaning very powdery and you're riding near bottom. Have to be wary of rocks. Could really use another 10cm.
Had a GREAT ride from Smokey to Vilna on Saturday
Lots of snow and it got deeper closer to Vilna
Off trail was at least 1-2 ft in places
Trail was good and not very much traffic
Snow is still very fluffy off Trail
Was out riding near Smoky and Andrew yesterday. The warm weather sure made the machines work hard and use plenty of go-juice. When the weather cools later this week the snow will have a chance to set and not be so powdery and the conditions will be awesome.
I rode in an area last year which the locals call Jacque's Pines and Bogdan's. It was south east of Smoky Lake near the river. There was a nice warm up cabin and we met some individuals there. I would like to know if they are members of this site. I only remember the name was James. There were a few other guys with him and they called him the nickname: "Fatman" which I thought was odd because he was much slimmer than two of the other guys in the group.
He had brush cut hair but couldn't tell how long it was.
Thanks for the name correction. It was hard to tell what they said with the small town Ukrainian accents.
I live in smoky lake. The guy wit the mullet you speek of is james goryniuk.Hard to explain how to get to the Pines youd have to go wit someone who knows and then youll know. And as for ten inches of snow.ya in the drifted parts.other then that there is like 6 inches of fluff.crapy riding conditions.
South side river lands are rideable provided you know the areas. Soft powdery snow makes you ride along bottom still. Make sure you turn your field rock magnets off...
To cross the river is not fun as the ice has chunked up severely in most places. Need a blanket of snow to smooth that out.
Was out in Radway Waskatenau area last saturday. Pretty lousy snow conditions. Won't be riding there unless we get a good snowfall. Too hard on the machine
It's ridable but soft. With the warm temps this should crust up the snowpack but we need another dump soon. Also, be VERY careful on the north sask, as there are plenty of open water spots on the river between ElDorina and Waskatenau. River Rats cabin crossing and Andrew fire pit crossing seems to be ok but with this stretch of warm weather this week that could change. Haven't seen the river open in these areas for many years.
The Iron Horse Trail last nite was still in great shape all the way to St. Paul, despite a lot of sled traffic thru the weekend. Recent grooming has held up very well.
Many thanks to Vern and the Grooming Foundation.
