Are plugs black from oil or black from being too rich? Don't want to go to lean if it is an oil problem. Go by piston wash to determine overall jetting condition as well as oil usage, plugs change quickly, the black could be from extended period of idling or low throttle speed operation. you need to do a WOT run and shut down at end holding throttle open still and then pull plugs immediately.

Here is the proper procedure for setting baseline EGT's (you don't need to follow the calibration of the EGT reading to your plug colour if you don't have an EGT), and this is a great way to determine what your plug readings are at different throttle settings (again - even without the EGT gauge).

Also, find out what the stock jetting for it was or get a jetting chart for it so you have a spot to start from. It may still be set at sea level (factory) jetting.
