does any one know if you have to pull the cases a part to change out the brass gear that drives rotary valve on a 670 or can you leave the engine together.

I'd pull it down just to ensure there is no debris in the cases - you could have a blockage (lubrication). As for your question - I'm thinking it can be done, been a few years since I worked on a RV engine, but I always pulled them down to inspect...sucks to have to repair it twice.
