The Alberta government imposed a province-wide fire ban Tuesday in response to the high wildfire risks and windy conditions.

The ban, issued late Tuesday afternoon, takes effect immediately.

Alberta residents are now prohibited from using wood, briquette and propane/natural gas fires including those in designated fire facilities and portable fire pits. Gas and propane stoves approved for cooking are still allowed.

The only exceptions to the ban are federal lands where there are no fire control agreements and First Nation reserves outside of forest protection areas.

Urban municipalities are also exempt, although the province is encouraging
them to impose bans as well. The City of Edmonton issued a partial fire ban earlier Tuesday, which prohibits open air burning, fires in park areas and fireworks.

Legal backyard fire pits are still allowed. City officials are urging all residents to take care using backyard fire pits, barbecues and cigarettes.

A ban was also issued late Tuesday on open flames inside Calgary's city limits. Barbeques are exempt, officials said. Breaching the ban carries a fine of $5,000.

There are currently 100 wildfires in the province with 23 of them burning out of control.

Bye
I just look on the link, and I question your reading skills. Kinda looks like NO fire other then one in a controlled manor like butane or propane.

Nope. We're headed out anyways. It's gonna rain....and/or snow...Ban or no ban, we will quad, eat, drink, and be merry.....we'll just have to start earlier and end earlier due to the "hug the greenie" policy this weekend. (and no, this is in no way a slight on the forest fire issues for the rest of the province.....it's a shot at the spineless politician who used this recent tragedy as an excuse to pander to the people that don't like weekend camping....there's frickin SNOW on the ground where we're going FFS!)

i dont know the people of slave lake may beg to differ. lets be honest, with the winds this is not the time to be burning. wet conditions on the ground may not stop those 25,000 dead tree's from firing up off of a spark.

lets ask those who lost their homes if maybe we should quit burning chit for a little while. maybe this fire started over a fallen power line but would it have been any different if someone was burning off their garbage and it got away from them.

i love my camp fires, and i love my over the fire hot dogs and marshmallows but really....bitch out the province or a politician for saying " hey lets not burn chit until we maybe dont lose another town over it"

easy to be pissy about not having a camp fine when your house isnt the one in ashes.......just sayin

Umm what? 100 fires burning in the province, 30-some out of control, more total acreage burned so far this year than all of last year. It's one friggin' long weekend for crying out loud. Boo Hoo! Grow up!
