oil level

I have a yamaha grizzly 1999 600 cc and can't seem to find an answer to this. When I do an oil change, if I put the recommended amount 1.76 litres, the oil is barely in the sight glass. If I bring it up to the middle of the sight glass, it drops very low when I start the unit. If I fill to the top of the sight glass it drops to the middle when running. So where should the level be when cold and not running?

needs to be between the 2 oil level marks when cold, the top mark is better.

look at the sight glass just a bit closer, you'll see them on the left edge, if i remember right. an upper and a lower.
