The girl friends 300 4x4 Honda has a new sound that's uncool. It makes a clunk sound while slowing down( only seems to make the noise going down hill ) can't get it to make the noise on the flat. Each time it dose make the noise it's very distinct in the front end. Only when you let off the throttle, nothing while grabbing gears or just running down the trail. To me it sounds like a ring gear in the diff or the transfer case? Wondering if anyone has come a cross this and any ideas to look into would be great! The cv joints are tight so I'm not sure where to look? It's a solid axle in the back, if that helps anyone.

Ok sparky and I looked at his Honda.
Have it lifted on my hoist and ran it

If u get the wheels rolling unloaded and get it into 2nd at a lower speed it seems like the back axle is binding where the front stays going.

So after looking and trying some stuff we ratchet straped the rear diff up ( not unloaded but like u have weight on it)
And the noise and binding just about goes away.
Is it normal for the shaft tube u joint to do this unloaded and the rear at a angle down.

Or do ya think the u joints dry and binding ??
