Well guys - just got the word from my doctor that my back is really screwed up (disc protrusion with nerve complications). According to him, snowmobiling is "poison" for the back and I should quit if I want to keep doing the other things in my life that I do with my wife and kids - skiing, etc.

This is a real bite - because I had big plans for this season. Was going to take at least a month off in Feb/Mar and ski, sled and enjoy life. Know it looks like it will be a bunch of physio that will hopefully improve things. I am feeling the worst for my oldest girl - she really likes sledding and I have had some great times with just the two of us out in the mountains.

So guys - it has been a slice. Watch for the big dispersal sale coming up. Sleds, trailer, deck, helmets etc. Should be some bargans

Sorry to hear, that really sucks, I know when I get older I will probably be pretty crippled up so trying to have the fun while I can, just seems that the whole work and money things seems to get in the road.

Well good luck and sorry to hear the bad news.:(

That's too bad. There's got to be a alternative for you. There was a fighter in the UFC fight on Sat that had back surgury. He took two years off to get over it and came back to the octogon. Doctors said he wasn't ever able to fight again and there he was. Not sure who fixed this dudes back but they did a bang up job.

I went thru disc surgery in 05. Had the numbness and no feeling in the left side of my body. Finnaly found out that it was in my neck(ruptured disc). I was out sledding the week before surgury and didnt tell the doc. After surgery was done he mentioned that my neck was so swollen he almost couldnt do the surgery.

I have since gotten all feeling back and been riding since. Hope you can have the same luck and not have to miss out on the things you and the family enjoy.

Im actually in the same boat, I have herniated discs in my lumbar and cervical, actually seeing the surgical specialist on Wednesday, I've been living with this crap for 10 years now with no uplet, but I dont let that stop me, still sled and quad, You just have to live on painkillers like me. I live on 1-2 oxy ir pills every single day.

Sorry to hear that your back may cause you to leave the sport, I had a lot of back problems in the early 90s sold my old 399 olimpic and thought I would never snowmobile again, the Doc told me I had a ruptured disc in my lower back and that I had to have surgery, I could hardly walk my leg and back hurt so much,I had surgery in May of 95 and was off work for 6 months now I feel 100% but it did take over a year to feel real good again , so maybe give it a year or so before you sell everthing then decide what to do.

You should check out some different solutions to your problem. I have a new empolyee who has a similar problem. He's done the research and found out instead of massive time off, putting his life on hold, risk of complications etc. He found a new therapy which uses a hot wire cauterizing the bad disc. It is almost a day surgery using local and a 1 hr operation south of the border and monitoring overnight & back to work 1 week later. There is some cost involved but what is having a LIFE worth. Check it out. I personally would do all I can when it means a total lifestyle change. GOOD LUCK:beer::beer::beer:

Sorry to hear the news, I also may have my motorsport career shortened. Got vertigo (labrinthytis), hockey or any contact sport is not recommended. Tried to drive my quad, that's out also. Don't think a sled will be any different. Can drive a vehicle again but no improvement in the last 4 weeks. Supposed to get tests back this week then off to see specialist. Don't give up, see other doctors/spcialists untill you find one that can help you.

Sorry for all you guys. I have suffered with torn up muscles in my back 3 times now where I am out of service for 10 days at a time. A little couch suffing & then I am good to go. Sure am cranky at the time though. When you hear stuff like this, it sure makes your problems seem petty. Best of luck, Don't give up. Get a second or third opinion.

Going throw the same issues right now. Massive back pains and the Doctors are telling possible no more sledding or quading. I guess that saying of "Strong back weak mind" is starting to catch up with some of us. But if there is anything I learned in life if there is a will there is a way. My mom was diagnosed with cancer and was given 3 to 6 months to live and she was hell bent on seeing here first Grand childern. She went south of the border got her self in tip top shape and beat the cancer for four years before it won:(.So long story short I person should never say never it may just be alittle why'll with astrong mind to heal to get the strong back ,back into shape.

Sorry to hear about your crappy luck. I went through a disc bulge + sciatica causing severe back, leg pain and my right foot was numb for a year. Laid on my stomach for 2 months since it was too painful to stand. Doctors said they could do nothing. I ended up using massage therapy and chiropractor directly after massage. This got me back on my feet and allowed me to start exercising. I still have muscle spasms and some discomfort if i over do it but i can ride a sled again and am going to try a motocross bike again. I went through this about 15 years ago. I am glad i tried numerous different treatments for my back until i found something that worked. GOOD LUCK!

I went through the pain..... crawling from bed to my truck. Getting help to put my socks on cause the percs and oxy I had for breakfast didn't kick in yet. Herniated L4 / L5 disk with scar tissue in my spinal canal pinching my spinal cord.......

I got told I was done riding. My first surgery in Calgary by Dr Hu failed..... made it worse.

I finally ended up in Texas.... After 2 years of slowly losing feeling in my feet and the worst cronic pain I hope I ever feel, I went to see Dr Pelosa.

I went under the knife a week later...... I was riding again 3 months later (casual with no pulling on skis) and full on again 8 months later.

I have a bad day now every so often..... but the cronic pain is gone. Cost me 35,000... but it was worth going to see a spinal specialist.

It can be fixed.......

Hey Barefooter! Don't throw in the towel just yet. :nono: High sided my 'busa @ 100mph in '04. Crushed three thoracic vertabrae. Had nurses roll me over every three hours for 14 days. Surgery at U of A hospital to fuse 5 vertabrae and install some titanium. Got some scar tissue and some nerve impingment...but the doc never told me to stop sleddin. That's me in the avator 18 months later. Chiropractor just shakes his head when I come in fresh off a ride with my sleds still in tow. Doesn't hurt while your sleddin...just when you stop. Nothin a few beers and some oxycontin can't fix.

Anyone suffering from neck or back pain, " google" Laser Spine Institute in Tampa. Had surgery October 22,2008 and was sledding in Qaurtz three weeks later.
Canadian Doctors don't have access to technology to fix up your back or neck.
