Highway 16 closed indefinitely after propane tanker accident

BY ANDREA WOO, VANCOUVER SUN MARCH 30, 2011 BE THE FIRST TO POST A COMMENT

VANCOUVER -- Highway 16 is closed indefinitely in both directions at Dome Creek, with no estimated time of re-opening, after a single-vehicle collision involving a propane tanker truck on Tuesday night.

The crash happened at around 10:15 p.m., three kilometres east of Slim Creek, when a commercial driver reported seeing a B-train (two-trailer) propane tanker flip over and go down an embankment, said RCMP Cpl. Dan Moskaluk.

The driver and sole occupant of the flipped tanker, a 31-year-old man from Edson, Alb., was able to get out of the vehicle and was taken to hospital with minor burns and non-life-threatening injuries.

One of the propane tanks exploded Tuesday night, causing a fireball reportedly visible from eight kilometres away.

The highway remains closed, and an evacuation zone of 1.5-km maintained as McBride RCMP, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructures and LPG Emergency Response Corp. continue to monitor the site.

Investigators are unable to approach until the second tanker burns off, Moskaluk said.

"Once the fire is out, our collision analysts will attend in order to determine the cause of the collision," he said.

Motorists are advised to check DriveBC for the latest updates.

I just talked to one of our RCMP friends here. Road closed until at least midnight. The tanker is a ways off the road, but the fuel is volatile and could blow at any time. They are talking about forcing the tanker to blow up in order to burn all the fuel off. That decision will be up to the safety people that are on site right now.
