Has anyone recently made the Trip from Edmonton to Idaho?
Last time we went was 2005.

I'm curious to know what it would cost to make a trip down there. I'm thinking Island Park.

Just a rough estimate on fuel there and back
fuel used there. Lodging and food. Trail passes.

Thanks

Island Park is great. With the exchange its a little more, but we have found its almost the same as going to Revy aside from the longer drive from Calgary.

As far as fuel goes, that is dependent on your vehicle and if you are towing or using a deck. For us, its about a conservative 9hr drive and 900kms. You will have to calculate for your extra 200-250km. Using a 1ton diesel with a deck we haven't been quite able to get there on a tank as we always seem to get a head wind. If you plan on driving around at all at your destination include that for your calculations.

If you know your vehicles current fuel mileage, use something like one of these calculators to come up with a fuel cost Gas Mileage Ultra Calculator use Idaho and Montanas current fuel rates Montana Gas Prices - Find Cheap Gas Prices in Montana

Rough estimate of 1350 (miles) with a random 14.5 MPG, paying 2.35US/Gallon (3.13 cdn at the time of calculation), is give or take $300 cdn for fuel for travel.

Food - breakfast/lunch/dinner per day of travel away. You can eat cheap or you can fine dine. If you get lodging with a kitchen, buy groceries and make your breakfast. If in a hotel see if they include it with your stay. Lunch is usually on the hill, so whatever your preffered meal is and then dinner can be your most expensive meal. If you go to the Ponds every night and spend money on booze its going to add up. I am pretty sure we were able to average under $35/US for dinner with drinks. Give yourself $50-60 a day for food.

Lodging, I can only recommend one place. https://eagleridgeranch.com/ These are sled in/out cabins, some with hot tubs, some larger, some smaller. Call them for pricing as you can sometimes swing a deal. I will swag the price at $140/night. I have seen numerous cabins priced anywhere from $500us per weekend and up. Normally these have a minimum stay, 3 nights or such. Check around. Likely $700-800 for 3-4 nights but can sleep a lot. Or regular hotel/motel stay for $100 or so US/night.

Sled fuel, is about on par for what you pay for any day in Canada. Trail passes was $30 US for the year.

If you haven't done it before, check out West Yellowstone as well. Great accommodations for reasonable price, sled in sled out right in town.

Id think around the 5-600 mark for everything. Fuel, food, booze, room. Could be less if you're thrifty could be more if you don't care.

Thank you takethebounce all good info. Truck is an 07 6lt 1ton towing a 4 place inclosed. If I talk my parents into going then it would be dad's 2ton Cummings. But I'd need a pet friendly place.

Right now I'm looking for the info to try and convince a few buddies to go. We went back in 2005. Loved it down there.

Everyone should do West Yellowstone. The atmosphere alone of several hundred sleds roaming around the streets in town is just awesome. Pull up to the fuel station, pizza shop, pub, whatever and ride back to your room at the end of the day. It's really just down the road from Island Park.

Love the terrain down there as well.

If you're driving a 6.0L don't forget to factor in injectors. They can get pricey.

when is the last time you were there Dan? amazing diversity in restaurants and accommodations and of course riding.

. I cannot comment on costs as I was there in dec of 91 and 92. We went to early in 92 and could have used a little more snow.

+1 for west yellowstone. Haven't been there since the early 2000's but had a major blast every time. We'll worth the drive and cost!

Hard on Collar Bones.....LOL. We're headed down to Island Park for the first Week of April, I'm hoping that with all the snow they are getting we will still have trail access from the cabin, if not I guess we trailer to staging areas...

Looking at the best route to take, which border crossing do people recommend we use? Coutts/Sweetgrass? Continue on the I-15 thru to Great Falls, then down to Idaho Falls on the same Interstate? Heading down with Mr & Mrs Bogger First Week of April

Cross there and stay on interstate 15 all the way. Depending on weather the worst is usually curves from great falls to helena and helena to butte. Once you cross into idaho the cross wings can get nasty. If you want some more drive beta (hotels, food, fuel) send me a pm

I think we're going to leave Edmonton area bright and early on Saturday April 1, and just power right thru to Island Park that day..... we'll have 4 people capable of driving so I'm not too worried about it. If we change our minds though and want more info I'll definitely send you a message!

Thanks for the information!

No problem, just be mindful of your fuel stops. Some of the smaller "towns" in south montana don't have fuel.

The shortest and fastest way is I-15 to Helena, Hwy 12, Hwy 287, Hwy 87 and Hwy 20. It will save you a ton of grief especially if the roads are bad...you won't have to worry about the hill dropping into Butte or the Monida Pass on the ID/MT border and you'll be out of most of the wind...much flatter running. I use to run this way hauling produce all the time when the roads were iffy. Lots of fuel stops...Great Falls, Helena, Three Forks.
