Whats a good program to monitor employees use of the internet? I have 1 person who surfs more than i do and what to bring it to a stop but need to be able to track where, how often and how long she is on the net. i have used the mircosoft properties settings and she keeps changing the setting to delete history after exiting. is there a way to view what and where she has gone?

Thanks

Kurt

There are all kinds of ways to track, but there is likely an easier solution, you can block certain ISP's and internet addresses from your server. The big culprits are Facebook, myspace, etc. Block those sites and I bet the usage slows dramatically.

The problem with usage monitoring is that it will eat up a ton of your own time trying to decipher what was being viewed and determining what 'may' have been work related.

Anyone that knows there way around a computer will find ways to 'fool' a monitoring tool if they really want to...

If you would like a super easy one that is free, check out Norton Family on the web...you can monitor, and set rules, but you will even get full transcripts of any IM chat as well as a full list of websites and time spent at each site, and time daily. You can even set it that it will kick her off the internet if she reaches a certain time limit.

And, its free...lol

Biggest issue to me is trust. As a business owner, I would address my concerns to her, give her a chance to hear you out, and then fire her if she doesnt comply. We are in a recession and there are tons of super qualified individuals out there right now, if this one doesnt value her job, there are many others that would...I know it sounds cold, but its true.

Want to here something crazy, my father inlaw will never put the internet in his business because he was reading that for everyone that has internet at work spends at least 1/2 hr a day doing there own stuff online x number of people in canada = a ch!t load of lost employors money it is in the millions of hrs, so will will never put it there unless he has to and at that point block certain sites.....Kick them off.....GOOD LUCK...

Sure glad my boss doesn't track use.......

I'll be the first to admit I spend maybe too much time on here.... but I still get my work done and have become quite efficent at muti-tasking.
As I type this message I am on the phone dealing with city planning permit issues. When on the phone I browse thru the new posts, and reply when I have time....

If the boss monitored my usage it would show that I sign in to S&M @ 8am and sign out again at 5-6-7 or whenever I leave for the day....

that last sentance cut into company time as my phone call has ended and you folks are making me nervous so I better get back to work....but S&M stays open and I will refresh it next time I pick up the phone.

There are tonnes of ways to monitor and/or block webpages. It'll cost you some money, but it could totally make your employee more productive.

Easiest way to do so would be to block URL's thru your firewall or router.

Our Company allows for each user to log onto facebook for 1/2 hour per day. Its set-up through our server but also we are out of town and they do not leave our workplace all day so really the half hour on there is their own time anyway....don't know how its done but once they've reached their 1/2 hour ...thats it...can't log back on until the next day. I don't know cause I don't do facebook....

We are monitored all day for computer work.
Key words can be blocked as well as addresses.
Porn,facebook and chat sites.

That being said you can usually find a way into sites.

The only way to stop it is to be that much better then them. Blocking the URL won't do anything most of the time if they know what they are doing.

I really need a job were I can log onto S&M, I get on my iphone at lunch that's about it :(
