Snocross star Blair Morgan severs spine in motocross accident

MONTREAL — Blair Morgan, a star in the daredevil sports of snocross and motocross, suffered a broken back and severed spine in a motorcycle accident at a competition over the weekend, his team manager said Monday.
Morgan, 33, was taken to Montreal General Hospital after a crash during practice Saturday afternoon at the Montreal Supercross at Olympic Stadium, which was to have been his final motocross event of the season before switching to snowmobile events.
Dean Thompson, manager of the Blackfoot team, said Morgan's life is not in danger but the veteran racer from Prince Albert, Sask., was paralyzed from the chest down.
He is to spend 10 days to two weeks at the hospital before he is transferred to a facility in Saskatoon.
Thompson said Morgan's chances of recovering enough to perform again are "probably less than one per cent."
The accident occurred on a jump during practice for the Supercross, which drew a crowd of 40,000.
"He basically got pitched from the motorcycle," said Thompson. "It happened from the impact."
He added that Morgan "knows what happened, he has full control of his mental capacities."
Morgan, who is married and has two children, also suffered a broken back in a crash in 2003, but recovered and returned to performing six months later.
Morgan rides motocross bikes from May to September, then moves to snocross. He has won five times and been on the podium three other times at the Winter X-Games.
He has his own line of clothing and his own video game.
"He has had a very successful career in motocross and snocross," said Thompson. "He's a respected individual in the community. A lot of people are concerned."

That's so tragic. I really feel for him and his family. He's had a few close calls in the past too, but he's always got back on the horse and headed right out to the ragged edge again.

By the sounds of it, he's going to be permanently paralyzed.

There's rumor of some sort of dedication or a bit of a fundraiser for Blair at the Thunder Struck premier in Calgary. Not sure of any details yet.

Here is an Update on Blair Morgan

From Terri Morgan Blair’s wife. As most of you know Blair has suffered a substantial injury due to a crash while practicing for Montreal Supercross at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal. During Saturday afternoon practice in Montreal, Blair sustained substantial injuries to his middle back. A surgery was performed and went well, however it was soon discovered that as a result of the vertebrae separating from each other on impact, Blair’s spinal cord was severed, leaving him with paralysis from his middle back down. He was taken off the ventilator soon after surgery and has been progressing well since. This afternoon (September 22, 2008) he was moved out of ICU to the orthopaedic floor and arrangements are now being made for his transfer closer to home. He is resting now and he is focused on recovering and working closely with the physiotherapists. I know as most of you do as well, Blair is a fighter and this incidence will not keep him down for long.
Special thanks to everyone for their well wishes, just so you know there are so many people rooting for Blair and we really appreciate it so much.

Please feel free to e-mail your questions and well wishes to Blair at blairmorganrecovery@gmail.com
