CORRECTION: The top winners of the Alcan 200 Road Rally donated their earnings to Jeffrey Peede's family. An earlier version of the story was incorrect.

FAIRBANKS -- A North Pole man died Saturday morning during a snowmachine race near Haines, according to race organizers.

The racer, 38-year-old Jeffrey Peede, was competing in the Alcan 200 Road Rally when he was killed in a crash shortly after 10 a.m., race director Dan Hanson said Sunday.

He was pronounced dead at a nearby clinic, according to an online report from Alaska State Troopers.

Hanson said Peede and his brother were long-time participants in the annual race, where snowmachine lovers from Canada and Alaska race and return along a course that follows the Haines Highway, which the national government in Canada shuts down so the race can be held.

Race organizers declined to release details of the crash until a troopers investigation winds down. Hanson called the Peede brothers “racers at heart” and extended condolences to friends and family.

“Our hearts go out to the Peede family,” he said in a prepared statement.

“The racers that attended this year’s race are saddened by the loss of their fellow racer and friend.”

Hanson said the crash occurred only about seven or eight miles into the race. He said the other competitors — there were 40 racers in full — finished, and the top winners donated their earnings to Jeffrey Peede's family.

“Everybody in the race is looking forward to next year so they can race for Jeff,” he said.

Travis Adams took top prize overall in the Alcan 200 by finishing in one hour, 44 minutes and 17 seconds and reaching measured speeds averaging 113.02 miles an hour, Hanson said. Craig Hill and Colby Hill came in second and third, respectively.
