Different rules for Hourly & salary... Hourly does not require any severance with Salary you can usually get away with 1 week per year of employment but best to keep it a minimum of 2 weeks. This only becomes a problem if the employee decides to fight their termination - If severance is contested they can go to the labor board and get arbitration. If the arbitrator feels the company was malicious or unfair to the employee they can decide what severance to award.

In the current situation there will be much sympathy for both employers and employees and it would be hard to argue that 1 week per year with a 2 week minimum is not fair... Alberta Public service pays 1.5 weeks per full continuous year of employment.

Lots of employers will not be paying any severance and it likely will not be contested given the current situation and the level of government support available to workers.

Yes different rules for hourly vs. Salary Some of the multinational corporations in oil and gas have, in the last few years given a range of 3 to 4 weeks per year of service to a max of 104 weeks so it very by industry too. All depends on age, seniority of position and years of service. It can be different for each employee.

Hey Ron. Is your company an member of CFIB?
Not at this moment.
And when talking to Alberta labour employers help line, they kindly referred me over to a company called Peninsula, who is a company that is independent of the government but works with employers to put together a program for employment. They wont even tell me a rough cost, but want to go though it all, I said NOPE not interested, seems kinda fixed that the government sends you here. Ill see if my payroll company offers these services, I use Payworks.

Not really Matt, We are basically Industrial Hygienists, or Occupational Hygienists, Indoor air quality consultants, more like engineering. Such a different field. I would of kept them working if there was a better offer from the government but 10% doesn't cut it. That's a joke.

from my experience, having been through 3-4 of these type of things, you are best to lay them off now, than to try and carry them, with no work. Best to find out now, what you are required to doo by the law.
get it over with now. offer them work when it is available. Have them bring back vehicles tools equipment, gas cards etc. gather their things, collect keys, and escort to door. otherwise your stuff will disappear or worse! been there done that got the t-shirt.

You can renew there temporary layoffs up to 3 times. Or at least you were able to at the start of the slow down. My employer did this a few times. But that was 5-6years ago so it may have changed.

JT just announced they are gonna cover 75% of wages.

Not sure if this helps enough to still keep guys or not.......

Maybe a guy could work something out with the employee where he takes a 25% haircut and 100% of the wage is covered.

Here is a link to the a calculator through my payroll company, https://blog.payworks.ca/payworks-introduces-temporary-wage-subsidy-calculator

That was with the 10% Subsidy, I'm waiting to see if I quality for the 75% subsidy as this is only to select businesses according to the Government. Business that cannot operate, I am an essential service even if my business has been affected by a loss of 80% of my work I need to still qualify.

Any idea where a guy can find the fine print on the 75%?
10% is open to any company?

Ill post what I can once Payworks updates me on this, for now its 10% and will be returned to me on April 15.

I only see this quote right from the POS.
“It’s becoming clear that we need to do more — much more — so we’re bringing that percentage up to 75 per cent for qualifying businesses,” he said. “This means people will continue to be paid even though their employers have to slow down or stop their businesses.”

It's not on there yet.

The 10% is any company that had less than $15M revenue last year.

Max of $1375 per employee and $25k per company.

I hope they up those limits quite a bit, because at 75% we hit those limits in less than a week.

Does diddly squat for us.

We will see i guess.
