Wonder if the new deep keel has anything to do with it
I think it does, when we went for a ride to eagles pass, rightsideup has a t 3, and us had xm... He would stop dead at the creek crossings, when we wouldn't

We had to pull him every one.... The skis dug in bad compared

I've always heard of a Skag being a runner without carbides.

Most likely it's orgins are a variant from the term Skeg which is a protective extension on the keel of a boat to protect the rudder. Skeg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But it could have origins of black tar heroin in the 80's. Let's go with that!

They were called that in the 60's and 70's and I still call them that.

I exchange the carbides for mild steel as I don't like carbides. My mild steel skags are just fine at 600 km.

X2 carbides are useless just destroy floors and trailers. Don't need them in the hills

I run one carbide on one ski, and one cheap smooth runner on the other as advised by a couple buddies that used to run traplines out east. That way it doesn't dart on icy trails that have grooves in them from other sleds, trail groomer, etc but you still have good steering on ice. But I agree for the most part you don't need carbides at all on a mountain sled.
