I was changing all the fluids in my sportsman today and when I pulled the plug to drain the transmission the plug was scraped up on top. I stuck my finger in the hole and there is a metal piece sitting in the bottom of the case.
The gear box still works normally except it will shift in and out of park without the brake applied. I'm thinking it must be part of the park lock. How easy are these gear boxes to disassemble? Is this a common problem?

I just did some research and learned that the chain can stretch and rub on the plug. No surprise with 12000 miles. Might just put oil in and run it for now.

My 800 shifted in and out of park without applying the brake right from new.

Thats interesting, maybe only the 500's had that.
I'm sure it's just a loose chain now that I inspected it more. I didn't realize there was so little space between the sprocket and the case.
