Ok, looking for ideas before i bring it in to a shop..
When driving under load everything sounds fine, with no load everything sounds fine. But the odd time, if just feathering the throttle (ie going downhill), it's what sounds like a small metal/metal rattle coming from the engine compartment, my guess was turbo bearings or tourqe convertor? Also once and a while if running hot and come to a stop, when starting to go, the rattle can be heard, actually sounds worse if it is making noise from a dead stop... I'm not a mechanic but have a pretty good ear, just can't get anything consistant to put it together. Don't seem to have any power loss and has been doing it on/off for quite some time. Have heard some ideas from asking around, just looking for some more thoughts, preferably not "get a dodge or chev", but it's expected, i know.. but any help is appreciated.

where is the damn snow already btw??

Yup, i would check all the external components.... Not likely internal engine problem..... Possible, belt tensioner, alternator bearings piling up, maybe waterpump on it's way or, or even the viscuos fan clutch............ If you can make the problem happen quite easily, then remove the fan belt and try it again(don't run too long, as the waterpump etc won't be operating). We've also replaced a broken flex plate that also had a funny tinny rattle noise. Keep us posted.......

will have another look for anything loose again and will check the belt tensioner. can't get it happen when i want..typical, like i said, usually seems to be noticable once pulling hard on the hwy with sled, trailer or driving a bit fast for long periods and is noticable around 1-4psi boost, when feathering the throttle basically. I have a gut feeling it's related to temp somehow. won't be home to check for a week or two but will update with findings. thanks again for the ideas:beer:, any more thoughts please post.

On my truck the downpipe off the manifold or turbo cant remember without going out and looking had a crack. It was on passenger side of engine anyways if you crawl underneath and look up the pipe had a flex part to it.Anyways it made more of whistle but have read the sound described as many things. The crack was on the flex part and I could feel the exhaust coming out there with my hand.At first I thought it was turbo or a bearing somewhere too.

I had a Chev 6.5 TD, and had the same problem, at the same time. I got fed up, and took it into a dealership. They said that one of my injectors, was going out of time. They re timed it, and my noise went away.

I have'nt had that yet on my Ford

I took it to Ron Hodgson in St. Albert, a bunch of years ago. And that's all they told me. That one injector was out of time, and that was the cause of the noise. Maybe by retiming it, it could have corrected the problem, and maybe the problem wasn't that it was out. I honestly don't know enough about diesels. But that is what was said to me. And it worked.

weird.... I don't understand how one injector gets out of time.... I would suspect the injection pump maybe got out of time, and that could give you some driveability and noises, but i don't think 1 injector can get out of time......

Well, like I said it was a bunch of years ago. Maybe, it was one row of injectors. I would have to do some deep digging to find the org. work order.

not really getting how an injector would cause a rattle like the noise i hear, it can actually be quite loud, but appreciate the ideas, thanks.
I drive a little diesel Toyota Hilux here at work, and there has been this god awful buzz which sounded like it was right under the instrument cluster panel, ended up being a loose clamp on the airbox housing...never seen that one being the cause...so that's why any idea is a good one, especially personal experince. keep em coming, thxs again.

if i only had the $ to have pyro's in each hole..
but i do feel there is a connection with engine temp...as in, it seems to happen when it's really warm, after a long pull up a mtn pass for example. thanks.
