Hi Fella's I'm throwing this question out to you experts, My Grizzly fights back like hell on a cold day when I try to start it, Like up to 5 mins, while the engine is turning over the starter dissengages after about 3-4 secs of cranking, It will do this about 5-7 times, When it does finally stay engaged it cranks & cranks and every so often it must start to load up because it back fires & stops the engine dead ( Horrible sound ) I sure would hate to break a ring gear, Finally it fires up but won't idle I have to just feather the throttle ever so slightly for about 10 seconds then everything is good.
Yes part of the problem is I have summer oil, But -10 isn't that cold! And that shouldn't cause the starter to disengage
My 400 polaris with a weak battery will fire right up after the first 2-3 seconds of starter time, With summer oil in it

for what it's worth, my big bear is exactly the same way. I've just chalked it up to being a cold blooded bitch!

as for the starter disengaging, i'm assuming mine is getting weak and won't be too surprised when it craters on me (hopefully later than sooner!)

As for the extended cranking, I've found that sitting a liitle electric space heater or even my flood lights beside the quad for a little while (usually not that long cause i'm usually in a hurry) it fires up alot faster.
If I'm away from the garage and heat then in a worst case situation run an exhaust hose (4" dryer vent tube will do) from your truck to right beside the engine on your quad...this'll do the trick when nothing else will.

Also, I noticed right away with mine in the cold that if I just feather the choke on a little bit at a time it usually fires up alot quicker too!

It seems every machine is different for cold weather, but unfortunately the yamaha's seem a little worse for cold starts than others.

Just my 2 cents!!

Oh yes but a choke would be nice, My Grizz is EFI no choke to be had, So were stuck relying on the computer & all it's sensors.

As far as having an aux heat source that also would be way to easy expecially 20 miles back in the bush,
I guess light a fire wait for it burn down and use the hot coals under the bike would be my last minute resource

lol, yep, had i paid attention i probably would've caught on to the EFI on the 700

yes, 20 miles out gets tough for finding heat...another machine blowing the exhaust on it? but.....with the fuel injected your right, you shouldn't have to think about it at all. :headscratch3:

:dunno:

My 660 is horible in the cold but a $47 1" inline heater will fix that just plug it in half hour before and it should fire right away

Hey smokin have you tried playing with the different fuel map settings that are built into the computer? Use lighter weight oil for winter. Maybe put a heater in your garage so that it is a little more comfy for working on the brother's cummin's....:p

P.S I'm assuming that I'm thinking that your the fella that has a cummins in his ford so that it is now a reliable hunting truck....

The old Ford is hanging but the Cummins is HUNG and still runs like a dream,

The only reliable hunting buggy is a Willy's Jeep, It's like an energizer bunny KEEPS GOING and GOING,
Ya I did the oil and fuel map settings, A little better but still not great
The Jeep runs better than this friggin Yammy, The bikes parked till spring or until a Chinook arch rolls
Hey you wouldn't be that fella that was on his way to the mountains and bought that new sled in Edson with out askin momma first, Can ya still slice the air in your home with a knife, You may want to put a heater in your garage or dog house, LOL

I had the same Problem Tonight (as did Smokin Black)when I went out to Start the Grizz to pull back my trailer after someone hit it in the Alley last night. #*^!$ kids Rat Racing in the winter, they should learn to drive their cars so they don't wreck people's Property. Anways my Rant is over.
If anyone is interested the trailer is still for sale check the classified section,I guess I will need to drop the price a little.

hey it could be one of your sensors are out of wack, I have an arctic cat 700 efi, I haad some cold starting issues and my throttle positioning sensor was misaligned, I aligned it and no more problems! also the efi wont start unless you have a strong battery, you need a certain voltage to have the efi do it's stuff, so charge up the battery. I have a pull start on mine, I find it helps to turn the engine over and pull the cord at the same time, it seems to give it that extra kick. try and charge the battery, if that works great, if not either buy a code reader for it, or take it to your dealer. oh I almost forgot, clean your air filter first, and check your plug

Never thought about the throttle positioning sensor, I have the Quad wired with a battery minder which keeps the battery at a full charge.
Thanks for the Idea.

Just out of curiosity, when was the last time the plugs were changed. I go through plugs like mad with my old Polaris (granted it is a 2 stroke), but it does basically the same thing your saying till I put new plugs in it. Just a thought :beerchug:
