Made my first trip up to Renshaw last weekend. weather was great not alot of new snow but some good riding for sure. I found it strange though that it looked like alot of people did not have any gear? Is this normal? As I sat at the cabbin and looked around at the 50 or so people it didn't look like alot of them had packs, shovels, probes or even wearing beacons. I did notice all had room for beer. (no, I do not want to start up the drinking and riding thing again) but it kind of makes you feel nervous though with the avy warnings fairily high for that area last weekend and the recent deaths. I wondered what alot of those people would do if a late day avy happend after slamming beers all day with no gear, what would they be able to do to help? I don't want to start up a big debate, but maybe we could hear from some people that don't take any gear and why? Or do they have shovels in there boots?:d

there was alot of new snow back of Spirit, our avy forcast was considerable for last weekend but still no reason to not have your correct equipment. Best protection is still the thing on top of your shoulders, if you use it. Ride save all.

To answer your question I would say No this is not normal for sledding these days. A couple months ago at Allen we were snowed in and there was probably 50-75 people hanging around the cabin. I remember noting how everyone seemed to have proper gear, avy packs, etc.

I ride Renshaw all the time and have never seen that so I'd have to say not the norm. On a side note my beacon is one of the first things on me so unless someone buys me LOTS of beers no one going to see it. See a few guys with shovel on the back of the sled but thats a different debate as long as you got it its ok with me.

I think the reason that they had no safety gear is because they didnt really go up to ride........more of a ride to the cabin and get snot hangin drunk all day and really not hit the hills at all. You seem to notice that more in the spring as guys have got alot of good rides in all winter so the spring ones are more for a male bonding piss up.Been there and done that but I would rather sit in the bar all day than ride that rough 30km up and back just to drink!
