850 Recoil Issues

So took the new sled out, got about 80km away from the truck and noticed that the recoil wasn't working. Thank god the shot did.

Parked it in the garage,went to start pulling it apart and it was working again. WTF?

Recoil technology is ongoing on Doo's now for at least 30 years. Probably needs some heat reflective tape on the cover to keep it cooler. Plastic parts inside can melt together.

Should I be putting a new recoil on first?

Its probably all right. Probably just got hot enough it stuck together a bit. Try the heat tape first and if that was the issue that will fix it skeg. I think if it was a mechanical failure it would fail and stay failed.

Are these ones greased?

Its been awhile since I've been in one as I always put tape on mine at new but I don't believe they grease them anymore. Maybe someone can chime in?

Like Ken mentioned, heat tape and even a .25mm thick high density foam between rewind and bulkhead as well .

heat tape the recoil and if running a aftermarket can I header wrap mine. Helps keep underhood heat down.

Same experience but I can't remember when mine started. It was with the XM's. One year everything was fine (maybe 2014) and the next (maybe 2015) I fried the rewind. Nothing changed on the sled as far as distance were concerned and theThing worked great on the 2014 but cooked things on the 2015. Since then, as stated above, just as a precaution I have heat taped the rewind cover and any wire loom that is in the immediate vicinity. Good luck.

Put heat tape on my '15 and '19 before they hit the snow and never had an issue with either of them.

Ive always heat taped mine.
Interesting enough I jave not had a recoil problem since I started using the stock muffler.

see any other meltage issues? Boy there is a lot of stuff jammed under that hood.

This was 100% stock, picked it up from the dealer and straight to the staging area.

No I have not actually. I just heat taped the recoil on my turbo. I see there is heat tape on the shot capacitor. I do not remember seeing that on my 19.

Happened on my 20'.. Cold start in the morning, grease didn't allow the dogs to go back in and revolution of the recoil stripped them off..

I heat taped my 19 recoil before i even rode it. Stripped all the foam off the panels. Left the stock can on, and it still did this exact same thing on the first couple of rides, been problem free ever since thou. This is the main reason i got the shot, tired of replacing doo recoils. With only pulling the recoil once a day it should last the life of the sled i would hope. I did have to replace a shot capacitor already thou

Had the same issue as Director posted above . I went through atleast 5 or 6 recoils on my 2017 . Replaced under warranty every single time thankfully . I deffintely got good use out of the little hand pull rope they give you for wrapping the clutch lol.

yikes i didnt think this was still an issue been running stock can for years and never had a problem. Like mentioned Heat Foil tape and should be good to go
