Mine is a garmin etrex legend but from the pics you get the idea. I had it mounted the same on the rev and never had any problems with it getting knocked about.

Here are a couple of pics of my trailer. As you can see there is lots of extra room for stuff. It's about 100" wide so you do need the extending mirrors.

I have a Silver Sport, 14' rectangle, 5' V, lots of extra room for fuel, gear etc. All aluminum so not too heavy either.

Lots of clunks turning at low speed? might be your intermediate steering shaft, a known issue for later models

I talked to Martin Equip. today on an unrelated issue (shocks) and they are swamped right now doing the '08 driveshaft recalls.
